EXGES PROITTAY ISURCEDBYBLANE i . iMe_ans to Increase Wages Is Seen by Republican | +-. in Levy Proposal.v | | By the Associated Press. | SUSSEX, Wis., September 22.—An ex- | cess profit tax was recommended today by Senator Blaine, Republican, Wiscon- sin, as a means to equalize the tax burden and .prevent the accumulation | of vast wealth in the hands of a few. “It is obvious to me” Blaine said, “that the unequal distribution of wealth and income is the primary cause of the present depression here in America.” Addressing & large group of farmers gathered here, the Wisconsin Senator said that to increase the normal in- come tax “will in no way afford a rem- edy in the redistribution of wealth and income.” An excess profits tax, he said, “dis- | courages monopolies, 18 a self restraint upon mergers and chain organizations, courages exorbitant and uncon- scionable price fixing, increases wages and, through those avenues, enhances the purchasing power of the consumer, creates a broader market, not only for the manufactured product but, as well, the agricultural product, and in the course of the natural laws that even- tually control, the purchasing power of the public is constantly keeping step with production. Blaine said emplcyers would rather pay higher wages than an excess profit tax and that would, he added, result in increased purchasing power.
