% REAL ESTATE. e NEW IVENTINS T0 EFEAT ROBBER Photo-Electric Cell Will Cause Alarm—Many Home Con- veniences New. The sclentist is at work on new in- ventions by which light will be transformed into a watch dog or pri- | home-owner, | according to | vate secretary to the among other things, statements made this week by experis at the first fwo of the series of con- ferences on illumination being held Monday and Thursday evenings under auspices of the Electric ILeague of ‘Washington. ‘The photo-electric cell will be em- ployed in the future as a guard against robbers, according to Samuel ‘G. Hibben, illuminating engineer, who addressed one of the meetings . this week. Starts Burglar Alarm. By use of such a cell, he said, it would be impossible for an intruder to walk acress a room without intercept- ing an invisible light ray which would set off a burglar alarm, strategically located, The photo-electric cell also may be used, he said, to turn on automatically the electric lights in.a school room when heavy banks of clouds pass over the school house, and darken the class rooms. . Knowing how man loves to reduce manual work, scientists alro are at work on a time control switch by means of which it would be possible to set a predetermined time when lights, radio or electric fan may be stopped automatically, Thus a bome- oner might retire leaving lights , radio going and fan blow- ing, and leave a brainless robot to attend to such details at a ceriain time. For Homes of Future. Mr. Hibben said he believed homes of the future would be provided with | three scparate lighting systems, one ' to provide illumination for reading and general lighting, a second consist- ing of miniature lamps at various parts of the house and grounds to act | as a protection against intruders, and, & third designed as a decorative fea- | ture and including® use of ultra-violet | rays. The third lighting conference of the geries will be held in the auditorium of | the Potomac Electric Power Company on Monday evening, and will be de- | voted to display lighting. Z. A. Biggs, local electrical engineer, will show pictures of and describe several local industries which boast modern light- installations. George Marshall, Jocal business man, will tell of appli- cations of light and the resulting im- provement in working conditions. The guest speaker will 'be R. M. Smart, dlluminating engineer, of Philadelphia. - MISS BRAUN MISSING Virginia Woman of 56 SBought on Flea of Relatives. Relatives have appealed for aid in a search for Miss Susan H.
