By & Staff Correspondent of The Star. HYATTSVILLE, MD,, September 3.— Sharp criticism of the action of County Policeman Arthur M. Brown for hand- cuffing Mrs, Clara Arnold, 23 years old, of 1012 Fourteenth street, Wash- ington, and charging her with resisting arrest was volced by Police Court Judge J. Chew Sheriff yesterday in dis- missing the charge against, the young woman. Mrs, Arnold was also accused of driving a car with dead tags and fined $10 for this offense. According to the testimony, Mrs. Ar- nold was driving the car of her brother, Randolph Harmels, to the home of her mother, near Mitchellville, when Officer Brown and Constable Willlam Kreitzer started in pursuit. Mrs. Arnold said she would not ac- company the police to Marlboro until told what the charge against her was, whereupon she was handcuffed and later charged with resisting arrest. At Marlboro she was jailed for the night, securing her liberty the following day,| after posting $200 bond. Mrs. Arnold also testified the officers fired shots during the chase, knocked off her wrist watch and trampled on it during the scuffie, and-ditched and wrecked her car en route to Marlboro. Staft Correspondent of The Star UPPER MARLBORO, Md., September 3.—Starting with the new school year, which opens September 11, Prince Georges nty will furnish free trans- portation to all high school as well as graded school pupils. In announcing the decision of the County Board of Education to discon- tinue its policy of charging some high school pupils $20 a year for transpor- tation, while others are transported free, Nicholas Orem, county superintendent of schools, declared it was agreed to fur- nish free transportation to high school pupils in anticipation of State aid from the equalization fund. The superin- tendent sald that Prince Georges county, which has not received a share of the equalization fund for some years, expects to obtain a part of it next year. During the last school year, it was pointed out, the school board collected $1,460 from high school pupils who were charged for transportation. Although Forest D. Bowile registered the highest numbe of points, 1,252, in the competitive examination held last | month for the scholarship to Charlotte | Hall School, the boerd awarded the | scholarship to Dan Robertson of Lan- | ham, who scored 1,001, because young | Bowie apparently falled to meet the at- ! tendance requirements.
