SPEED FORELAST Springfield, Mass., Pilot Ex-| pected to Set New Record ; at Cleveland Races. | By the Associated Press. CLEVELAND, Ohio, August 26.—A top speed of 290 miles an hour, nearly 20 miles an hour over the present Amer- fean air speed record, was predicted to- day for an entry in the Thompson trophy race in the National Air Races here next week. The speedster, a G-B sportster pow- ered with a Wasp junior motor, will be piloted by Lowell R. Bayles of Spring- Gield, Mass., and entered by the Spring- fleld Air Racing Association. The ship is a Jow-wing monoplane ‘with a 23-foot span and overall length | of 15 feet. The motor has been super- charged to deliver 400 horsepower. The cockpit is entirely closed and the plane has & landing speed of between 80 and 90 miles an hour. Rowland Plane Crashes. ‘The plane of Earl Rowland of Wichita, Kans., was demolished by a crash in a canyon east of Douglas, Ariz. Rowland blamed motor trouble. He and Mrs. Rowland, who accompanied him on the fiight, were not injured. Motor trouble led Barney Rawson of Cleveland to land eight miles west of El Paso.
