E elements did their best last night for the fifty- i seventh concert of Latin American music held on the ous _esplanade of the Union, and a large ful events to be found in the musical kingdom. Be- sides the in- evitable moon, which hung somewhere over the cypress groves (inevita- ble because no Summer festival held in these grounds _seems | to be able to . miss one), the blue of the Az- tec pavilion and languor which at no time gave vent to more than a mild crescendo—this was true even in the Canto Cubano “Algun Dla,” by Arturo de Castro— and while the music undoubtedly was partly responsible for much of its leisureliness there were moments when bheights perhaps great enough to reach the moon might have been reached. Signorita Garza, Mexican soprano, whose voice seemed slightly strained through nervousness, showed, how- ever, splendid vigor in the well known “Estrellita,” in which she was sup- ported by the band. She sang, too, & composition by Luis A. Delgadillo, “El Dia Que Me Quieras,” which was having its initial baptism in public, and which seemed like one of the pleasantest of the evenings' songs. Signor Gutlerrez, heard on these pro- grams before, whose voice has a peculiarly satisfying resonance to it, delighted his audience with familiar ~nd unfamiliar selecticns—having to Tepeat (a very, very rare honor at these concerts) the Gomez “Song of the Adventurer” from the opera “Il Guarany.” Other items of interest was to be seen sitting oh the steps of the esplanade evidently pleased With his surroundings and not at all disgruntled by the fact that he had only recently left sunny Spain be- hind him.
