THE EVENING WOULD INCREASE TAXES OF WEALTHY King Joins Senate Independ- ents in Plan to Help Balance Budget. Senator King, Democrat, of Utah, a | member of the Senate Finance Com- mittee, today joined Senate Rebublican independents in urging higher income taxes on the weaithy to help balance | the Government budget. King, who is preparing an increased tax bill, also agreed with Senator Couzens, Republ‘can, of Michigan, that the gift tax should be restored, and called for a material raise in the Fed- eral estate tax. Couzens also has de- manded increases in the higher income tax brackets, along with Senators Borah, Idaho, and Norris, Nebraska, Republican independents. King's proposal was not in accord, however, with some other Senate Dem- ocrats, including Senator Harrison of Mississippi, ranking minority member | of the Finance Committee, who belleves | the Treasury deficit should be met by | slower retirement of the public debt. The Utahan said he Believed the next Congress would be “compelled to seek additional revenue.” “I feel sure,” he added, “that because | of the present deficit and the extrava- | gance of the administration there will be another deficit next year. It seems to me then we either have got to con- tinue borrowing or reduce expenditures far beyond the plans of the administra- tion and increase taxes.” | He predicted there would be no ma- | terial reduction in next year's budget, | despite administration efforts to cut expenses.
