Baker, known as the “dean of American finance,” has come to light with the discovery that the great banker, who abhorred publicity, had a blography of his life published privately, and after six copies were , | turned over to him at a cost of about $25,000 a volume, had ordered the plates ' | destroyed or hidden away. The six books, according to trust- worthy sources, were given to mem-. bers of the Baker family, with instruc- tions that the work, written by Albert Bigelow Paine, the noted biographer, sm::lxlld never be permitted to reach the « | public. Y In keeping with this understanding, George F. Baker, jr.. who yesterday in- herited the bulk of his father’s estate ;, | When the will was probated, declined the 1 | request that the book be reprinted for general distribution. BY F. H. RICHARDSON. Specisl Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, May 14—Bonds were irregular in moderately active trading today. The general domestic list ranged somewhat lower owing to the depressive influence of the stock market and the failure of the secondary group to hold its recent gains. Junior carrier issues were all fractionally off, but trading was extremely light here, the declines running out of proportion to the volume. St. Louis-San Francisco issues were I off fractionally in the case of the A 4s and the 41s, and over a point in the case of the B 5s. It was reported in Wall street that the road’s new financ- ing, to take care of the general 5s and 6s, due July 1, would be in the form of $10,000,000 of five-year 6 per cent notes, which will be marketed on about @ 7.10 per cent yield basis. At the same time it was said that the financing Wwould be under new sponsorship. 3Speyer & Co. were bankers for the road’s last financing. Byihe Associated Press. NEW YORK, May 14.—Many of the brokerage house market letters today hold that the action of the rails fore- casts lower prices all around in the stock market. Constructive leadership, it 1s pointed out, is lacking, although there have been signs of pool operations. Comments include: E. F. Hutton & Co-~-We think that fluctuations of the market are flatten- ing sufficiently to suggest that a more positive clue as to the next direction of prices is not far . 35% 36 97% 50 9914 228% 4%s°53. . 1at T&T cv 4%s ‘39 20 Int T & T bs'55. With recently active bears apparently lifting pressure, the market is in a position to be forced up at any time, but all such false moves face unexpected interruption. Jackson Bros., Boesel & Co.—We an- ticipate a drifting downward move on small volume rather than a drastic 1 18 break on big volume. We fail to see how heavy marginal selling can be in- diced with brokers' loans already de- flated to an abnormally low level. Redmond & Co.—Technical condi- tions may justify a rally in the last half of the month, but will still believe that sufficient bad news lies ahead to| suggest the possibility of the market breaking to new low ground, although ! such action may be delayed until next month. Real constructive leadership, as differentiated from pool sponsor- ship, is still lacking, so far as we are able to determine, and until it makes its appearance, we doubt that any Inkrlnnd sustained advance in prices ely. ‘Babcock, Rushton & Co.—There are many individuals who believe that the authoritative position of the rails has been changed within the past two or three years. We are inclined to await further developments before coming to any such conclusion. Otis & Co.—Our position on the pros- cts for the market over the near ture is based entirely on the action of the rail stocks. For more than & year weakness in this group has been a successful forecaster of approaching general weakness. The rest of the market would have to provide excep- tionally reassuring behavior to make us overlook the action of the rails. BUYS CURB SEAT. It was in 1919 that Mr. Paine, who at_about that time had concluded an exhaustive study of Mark Twain and had published ~the noted American writer’s blography and letters, was sum- moned before Mr. Baker.
