frcs THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, WEDNESDAY, 'APRIL 8, '1931. DREISER 0 FIGHT PIGTURE OF STORY Plans Court Action Against Treatment of “An American Tragedy” for Films. By the Associated Press. LOS ANGELES, April 8—The Exam- iner says Theodore Dreiser, famous aj- thor, has disclosed plans to file an a tion in Federal Court shortly to protect authors “from the vivisection” of Holly- “wood flim producers and directors. Dreiser admitted, the paper said, that he had parted with Paramount over the talkie adaptation of his “An American Tragedy.” He said he would Gemand an injunction to restrain the producing company from showing the picture and 8 general equity ruling defining the Tights of authors unless the completed film was “perfectly satisfactory.” “They paid $150,000 for t.he screen | and talkie rights to my book,” he said. “When I read the script I went into a trance. “Jesse Lasky had me come to Holly- wood from New York to work with Josef Von Sternberg, the director. I came, I saw, I was conquered. They laughed at me. They said 1 was antiquated. They said Hollywood needed no advice or suggestions from mossback authors. “They tell me T'll b2 crazy over the fcture and I believe they're telling the ruth,” he said He added the question of authors’ rights “might just as well be settled now as later.” LEAVING FIRE BOARD D. IORTY young men from Prince- ton, fresh from a fashionable concert tour that took them to White Sulphur Springs and Hot Springs, stood on the minute stage of the Mayflower ball room last night and sang a pro- gram of well turned songs. The selections, commendably done for the most part, in spite of the obvious lack of breathing space, and the fact that some of the basses had to sing straight up into the proscenium, varied from old English to modern English and from there to the col- lege songs which the audience want- ed to hear most. It seemed, in fact, as if the Glee Club's best moment came with “Old or perhaps with the »" At this point TODAY'S AMUSEMENTS. Page, a baritone who deserves especial congratulations for his rendition of “Silvia,” and two plano duets played by Allan Struck, the able accompanist of the concert, and Frank B. Gunther. ese two young piano virtuosos won great ap- plause for their numbers and played snatches of the Gershwin “Rhapsody in Blue” for an encore to the obvious delight of the audience. Besides these soloist selections, an octet, chosen from members of the Glee Club, sang a group of songs with a touch more of the vaudeville stage than the concert stage to them, which, however, seemed to be as highly indorsed by the listeners as anything else. Of the more classical selections the Glee Club was at its best in the familiar “John Peel,” the Grieg ndsighting” and the “Jabber- ky,” for which Mr. Spaeth has written such dramatic and eccentric music. These numbers and many others of note rounded out the pro- gram pleasantly, and put the large audience in a splendid humor for the dance which took place almost im- mediately afterward. E. DE 8.
