Most of his childhood was passed in Daven- port, however, and Mark Twain's two Elliott Shaw characters scarcely knew more adven- turous lives than Shaw. Play did not interfere with early musical training for young Shaw. Both Elliott - sang as a_boy soprano in Davenport church choirs until his voice changed. At 18 he went to Chicago and studied music for two years. For the next five years he trav- eled in lyceum and chautauqua. Con- | vinced finally that such a fleld limited his future, he left it to take up further studies in New York City. At that time Victor wanted a male quartet. Shaw met Hart, Glenn and James. They organized themselves into the Shannon Quartet, so called because they specialized in the then popular Irish ballads When the old WJZ station in Newark, | N.
