Detective Sergt. Michael Dowd left police headquarters today for Newton, N. C, to bring back Malcolm Young, 26-year-old former District High Schooi teacher, under indictment here for the theft of more than 300 books from the Congressional Library. Young, who was arrested yesterday, left the books in an tment_house | here, where they were discovered Feb- | ruary 24. He will stand trial at an Mr. Young's service as a teacher in nated at the close of his probationary | his superior officers in the school sys- | tem, he failed to come up to the de- | manded st:ndards. Young subsequently | appealed to the Board of Education | against termination of his _services, | charging, through the newspapers, that ‘he was_being “"discharged” because he | objected to the principle of military | training in the cadet corps. School Board, however, no mention was made of Young's objections to the | cadets. The case against him was based entirely upon his alleged inability to maintain discipline, his failure to keep students' records and, in general, his failure to serve satisfactorily the pro- bationary teaching period. [JIMMIE WALKER’S MUG | IN OLDTIME BARBER SHOP | | Relics in Hudson Street Structure | Expected to Occupy Place in New York Museum. | NEW YORK (N.AN.A)—On Hud- | son street, in the southwest of Green- ‘ wich Village, is a three-story red brick | | building 106 years old. On the ground floor is & barber shop 84 years old, the oldest in this section. Against the wall is the barber's most | important furniture—the contrivance | where razors, mugs and so on are kept. | This one, all curves, really quaint and | charming, some day will go m‘o the New York Museum, on upper bPifth avenue, where objects of interest in the city's history are treasured. In one of the cubbyholes in this fur- niture is a mug with the name “James ‘Walker” inscribed on it. If ever the | mayor comes in for a shave there it is | waiting for him. “But he won't come,” says the pro- prietor, the third German who has run this ), and only Germans have. “Jimmie is & big man now and he would feel funny coming intothis little shop 'l;ld running into the fellows he | (Copyright, 1931, by North American News- paper Alliance.) THE EVENING Any Day “April Foolers” Geography Mystifies With Truths That Reno Is Farther West Than Los Angeles—Cleveland East of Jacksonville—Mississippi Flows Uphill. “April Fool's day gives practical jokers their big chance. Many per- sons, however, are fooled every day in ar by certain geographical od- says the National Geographic y. . Some Elusive Boundaries. “A famous cartoonist recently in- quired: Which is farthest west, Reno, Nev., or Los Angeles, Calif.? It is s0 natural to think of the Pacific Ocean as the extreme western boundary of the | United States, that the normal re- sponse is ‘Los Angeles.’ Whereas Reno, due to the sweeping incurve of the Southern California coast, is some 100 miles nearer Asia than Los Angeles. “Similarly the Atlantic coast line makes strange longitudinal bedfellows. Cleveland, Ohio, 579 miles by rail from New York, is seven miles farther east than Jacksonville, Fla. Miami is al- most directly south of Pittsburgh. “To reach the nearest part of Can- ada from Detroit, Mich, one must travel almost due south. A bend in the Detroit River accounts for this | directional inversion, confusing to vis- itors. “Panama offers an ‘east-is-west’ par- allel. Because of a giant bend in_the narrow isthmus, where it is severed by the Panama Canal, the sun rises the Pacific Ocean and sinks in the At- lantic. Ships in the canal travel from west to east to pass from the Atlan- tic Ocean to the Pacific! “It seems absurd to ask ‘Is the Pacific Ocean east or west of the City of New York in the Western Hemisphere? Yet at the Chilean port of Arica, center cf the recent Tacna-Arica dispute, the | blue waves of the Pacific wash a shore line that lies almost as far east as Port- land, Me. What's in a Place Name? “Names of products which include places are often more confusing. Bal- | san of Peru originated in the Central American Republic of El Salvador, still the chief producer. This thick oleoresin, used in perfumes and medicinal prep- arations, received its geographical mis- nomer in Spanish Colonial days, when all Pacific Coast products cleared through Peru, then the most important Spanish colony. It was named for its distribution center, rather than for its source. “Irish potatoes, as & name distin- guishing white potatoes from sweet potatoes, is likewise a geographical er- ror. The potato originated in the moun- tains of Peru and Chile. A famine which followed the failure of a potato | crop in Ireland led to study of varieties which would resist disease, and to the production of the better grades of po- tato known today. “Panama hats are not made in Pana- ma. Forty-niners returning to the East by way of Panama brought hats made by the nimble fingers of Ecuadorian women and children, and called them Panama hats. Most of the so-called Panama hats of the better grades are still made in Ecuador. “Another misleading place name is that of the Canary Islands. An imagi- native correspondent, telling of the ar- rival of the ‘DO-X' there recently, de- scribed flocks of yellow canary birds “for which the islands are named,’ rising to greet their mechanical sister of the air. The Canary Islands, however, received their name from the Latin word, canis, or dog. The canary birds of the islands are green; the yel- low variety comes from t! cages of German peasants. Capitals of Nations. “If you put the question this way, ‘In whas cities are the capitals of the United States and of Great Britain? the precise answer is, “The Capital of the United States is not in any city and the capital of London is in the City of Westminster. The explanation is found in the peculiar structure of each of the two seats of government. The Capital of the United States is WoopwaRD & LOoTHROP A blue sports coat with raglan shoulders and a belt that is double in front..$10 A cape adds smart- ness to this little blue tweed coat, $7.50 A blue hat in the new poke shape with an applique of little pink felt apples...$5 INFANTS’ AND JUVENILES' APPAREL | than their mouths. STAR., WASHINGTON, the District of Columbia. Washington, technically, is a post office and a rail- way station. The National Capital is governed by three District Commis- sioners, located in a District building. ‘The Houses of Parliament and the principal palaces of London are in the City of Westminster, part of metro- | politan London. The true ‘City’ of | London is a tiny patch, a mile square, in the center of the London metropoli- | tan district. Does Mississippi Flow Uphill? “Are there any rivers that run up- hill? In a sense, yes, and they are not small, obscure rivers, hidden away in jungles and mountain fastnesses. Geography constantly plays April Fool with the Mississippl, longest of rivers, and with some of the southern branch- es of the Amazon. Their sources are actually nearer the center of the earth | The earth is not a true sphere, being some 13 miles fatter at the equator than at the poles. ‘Therefore, a river which rises some distance from the equator and flows toward it may, if it is long erough, be ‘higher’ at the end than at | the start. Regarded in this light the | stream ‘flows uphill.’ “What West Coast city is nearest to New York? By the present air lanes | San Francisco is 2,731 miles from | New York: Los Angeles, 2,774 miles, | and Seattle, 3,433 miles. But bring geography into the calculation and | Seattle is nearest, Los Angeles is second | and San Francisco is third. By using the so-called great circle route Seattle is only 2,385 miles from New York; | Los Angeles is 2,440, and San Fran- | cisco, 2,560. “The great circle takes advantage | of the tapering roundness of the earth, shortening air paths nearest the poles. Following the great circle from New York to Seattle one would pass through | Buffalo, Hamilton (Ontario), Northern Wisconsin, a point 25 miles south of Duluth, up to within a few miles of the Canadian border, and then down to Seattle, 100 miles from the border.” B Mine Rescue School Opens.
