NORMAN COMING | 10 TALK MONEY England’s Mystery Financier y Will Discuss Gold and Probably Silver. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, March 28—Montagu Norman, England’s mystery man of finance and governor of the Bank of England, is coming to America Friday to talk to American men of money about money. Mr. Norman has been here before most mysteriously, and he has talked about gold. He probably will talk about gold this time—and he may talk about silve Mysteriously and ~ quietly, of course, since he usually travels incognito and has little to say for the press. For months financiers have sougnt to | bring silver out of its present slough | of despond. Production has not in- creased materially, but sales by India, in its return to the gold standard, and by other countries to lessen the silver con- tent of their coinage, have glutted the markets. Hoover Conference Seen. The situation became so acute that President, Hoover was authorized by the recent Congress to call an international silver, conference. Silver men expect the President, fol- Jowing his return from the West Indies, to call that conference—to call it, per- | haps, while Mr. Norman is here. Silver, priced at 62 cents an ounce | in 1926, sells for about half that now. | Silver mines everywhere have been | closed. Trade with China, which has a silver’ money standard, has_ been de- moralized. And India has been hard hit. Indians hoard the white metal as savings. They have hidderi an estimated | five to eight billion ounces. It is entirely possible that the Right | Hon. Mr. Norman will go to Washing- | ton, although such plan has not been | “Third—As compenstion for agree- ing '\and to prevent t66 rapid a rise —and understanding that the govein- ments, and particularly India, may sell government-cwned silver whenever the price is more than, say 5 cents above e figuré agreed upon as above.” CONFESSES STEALING $5,000, NAMES OTHERS Man Arrested in Chicago Accuses Trainmaster of Part in Plot« By the Assoclated Press.
