WJSV announces a varied ‘program featuring - Chick Godfrey, ‘Walter Holt and Elizabeth Sherier. Folks Behind The Microphone BY THE RADIO EDITOR. ROM the stage to the screen to radio. These, in brief, are the principal steps in the meteoric rise to fame of Maurice Chev- alier, one of the latest of the ‘newcomers to the microphone. Chevlier takes radio seriously. He -approaches the microphone with im- agination. Instead of just a little black box he sees before him when he broad- casts thousands of firesides. Another attribute of the French star 15 his love for the American people. ‘They have made it . possible for him to make a lot of American dollars. But he says he’s not interested en- tirely in the money. ‘To sing for a Jarge American audience that only radio can yeach is what fascinates him. ‘There is an artistic thrill in that. And he loves thrills Somehow, the theater was in Chev- | alier’s blood, and must have come from some remote ancestor, for his imme- | diate family hadn’t numbered any @ctors or actresses. Born at Menil- montant, a spot near Paris, his first experiences were far from joyful. His father died and Maurice, at the age of 11, had to make some addition to the family exchequer. Pirst a carpenter, then an electrician, & printer and a painter of doll's faces, he failed miserably. Success, however, smiled on him as & nail maker. But he still spent his spare time singing, doing imitations. His first job as an entertainer was in a Parisian cafe, where he earned 3 francs a night for four nights a week. His imitations of popular stars won him a chance to meet Mistinguette, one of France's foremost musical comedy act- resses, and later he became her dancing partner in the “Folies Bergere.” ‘Then came the war. He was wound- ed and taken prisoner in Germany, but managed to escape by posing as a Red | Cross worker. Prance gave him the Military Cross A changed Pans, suffering from the | war, greeted him on his return, and soon he became a star. Elsie Janis got him to play opposite her in a London revue, “Hello, America.” Then he went to Argentina. Finally be came to the United States and made a few motion picture films. And now radio has claimed him as its latest idol | ¥k . | LTHOUGH Aline Berry plays the part of a happily married woman in the N. B.
