THREE DIE IN DASH OVER JOLIET WALLS Convicts Climb Over Barriers Into Hail of Machine Gun Bullets. By the Associated Press. JOLIET, Iil, February 23.—Prison guards, forewarned of an impending plot by prisoners to escape, early yes- terday shot to death three Chicago con- victs who scaled the wall of the old State Penitentiary in a futile dash for liberty. Aided by a powerful prison search- light, guards, posted outside the walls with machine guns as their weapons, found the three men easy targets and mowed them down before they had a chance to reach two automobiles parked on a roadside near the prison, presum- ably by confederates. Two Machines Escape. Occupants of the cars, pursued by guards in two automobiles, drove rapidly toward Chicago and escaped, apparent- 1y untouched by shots fired at them as they fled. Joseph Norkiewicz, 31, and Julio Chileno, 39, both serving time for a confidence game, and Alvin J. Kilman, 34, & convicted robber, were the men killed. They were part of a kitchen de- tail of five convicts. Overpowering Frank Lambert, a lone guard, who was with them in the re- fectory house, they thrust him into a refrigerator and slammed the door, about 3 a.m. Using large sticks taken from an ad- Joining bakery and nails smuggled from the prison machine shop, the plotters constructed a crude ladder which they carried across the prison yard to the southeast corner. Here they placed the ladder against a tool shed and barber shop and mounted to the roof, clamping a cable, also stolen from the machine shop, onto an abutting wall. Guards in Cafe. Norkiewicz, a 10-year man, was the first to climb down. The guards, in a restaurant across the street and in an automobile parked in a vacant lot near- by. waited. Chileno, who had _“done time” in jails at Paterson, N. J., and Trenton, N. J.; Baltimore and Flint, Mich., followed the leader. Still the guards withheld their fire. Then Kil- man began his descent and the or- der to shoot came. his removal to the hospital, and extra guards were placed to meet the emer- gency. 14 SOUGHT IN ARIZONA. One Convict Captured After Guard Fails to See Men Clambering Over Wall. FLORENCE, Ariz, February 23 (#). —Fourteen convicts, including one mur- derer, who clambered over the State Penitentiary wall here yesterday, were being tracked through sagebrush and cactus of surrounding desert today. Fifteen escaped, but one was cap- tured. A steel girder, taken from a prison construction job, enabled the conviets to climb to the top of the wall and drop 20 feet to the ground outside. The last man was seen by a guard as he sprinted for cover. Warden William Delbridge immedi- ately released bloodhounds and a guard detail. He relieved the wall guard, J. M. Daly, whom he described as “in- attentive.” A base_ball game had been in prog- | ress in the yard and several hundred prisoners had been taken from their cells to witness it. The warden said the escape plot apparently had been hatched on the spur of the moment. The captured convict was a Mexic serving a life term for murder. THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON the Anvil Ranch in Pima County two years ago because he did not like the food, was among those who escaped. ‘The prison is encompassed in a broad, bleak desert dotted by small settle- ments in which a stranger would be noticed immediately. Mrs. F. C. Winterer of 836 Juno St., St. Paul, found theanswer several years ago when she first started to use REM for her youngster Richard. As she herself tells it: “A few winter’s ago I happened to see REM advertised at a time when my son Richard had a very troublesome cough. I got a bottle of it at the Randolph Pharmacy at Randolph and Vic- toria, and it relieved his coughin at once. We've used it severfi times since and it’s always helped.” REM'’s a great remedy for coughs, as thousands testify. You’'ll be glad you insisted on REM.
