—16 LIVERPOOL WOMAN LORD MAYOR DIES Miss Margaret Beavan, “Lit- tle Mother,” 1929 Candi- date for Commons. By the Associated Press. LIVERPOOL, February 23.—Liverpool today mourned Miss Margaret Beavan, first woman to become its lord mayor and known as “Little Mother” because of her interest in child welfare. She died here yesterday after a brief iliness. Although weighing only 125 pounds she was a forceful public speaker and served successively as justice of the peace, member of the City Council and Jord mayor of Liverpool. In 1920 she ran for the House of Commons as a Conservative, but was beaten by the Labor candidate, Derwent Hall Caine, son of the novelist. She organized the Liverpool Child Welfare Association which has assisted more than 100,000 children and has maintained 30,000 in homes and special hospitals. )} She was considered as a little too sen- sitive for the rough and tumble of political life. The former lord mayor received many offers of marriage. During her mayoral speech of farewell to some Salvation Army girls she advised them not to remain spinsters. “It is all right when you are young,” Miss Beavan told the girls, “but when | you are getting on, vou want & man | 10 look after you.” In speaking of her own refusal to be married, xl‘xur}l]b!d “1 have | many times, she declared: Men are enjoyed freedom too long. NEW YORK (N.AN.A)—Many of | New York's prominent men, particularly of the Jewish race, are children of im- | migrants who came to this country practically penniless. It is just like Americans to think of the successful | sons of self-made men, although actual- ly they may be the product of fine old stock, with a rich background of Semitic culture.
