"TUBERCULAR GERM PROTECTS INFANTS Innoculation With Organism| Wards Off Disease, Savants Claim. By the Associated Press. BALTIMORE, February 21.—Innocu- | lation of infants exposed to tub!rcu-‘ losis infection in their homes with dead | germs of the disease, to give them| greater resistance, has been found suc- cessful to some degree in experiments at Johns Hopkins University, it was| announced yesterday. | The tésts of the method of innocula- tion, originated by Dr. Langer of Ham- burg, Germany, have been conducted by | Dr. Edward Albert Park, head of the Johns Hopkins department of pediatrics, and Dr. Francis Schwentker. The lat- tor is to describe the tests at a meet- ing of the Baltimore City Medical So- ciety tonight. ‘The method has been used extensive- Iv in Europe and elsewhere to develop resistance to tuberculosis in children. | ‘Tests have been made with the dead organisms at Saranac Lake, N. Y, but' only on animals, it was said. The Langer methcd differs from that | followed by Dr. Calmette in France, who developed a system of inoculating infants with an extremely weak strain | of live organisms. The Langer method, | the Johns Hopkins scientists said, is in- | capable of doing injury. It parallels | that now widely used in Inoculating | with the dead germ cf typhoid fever. Dr Park and Dr. Schwentker \A’ere Teticent today in discussing their ex- periments and made no claim for the lem of inoculation other than it s2emed tq increase the power of resist- ance. ANNAPOLIS, Md, February 21.— Maryland’s_Gretna Greens yesterday weathered the first and only storm of the biennial drive against them, when the House of Delegates adopted an un- favorable report of the Judiciary Com- mittee on a bill which would bave re- quired 24 hours’ delay in marriages after a license was issued. After the unfavorable report was adopted, the measure was laid on the table to preclude any further action at this session of the General Assembly. ‘The bill, introduced by Delcgate Popp, chubncan Allegany County, provided | for a delay of 24 hours between appli- | cation for a marriage license and its is- suance, and another 24-hour delay be- fore the ceremony could be performed. | It carried a clause requiring that all | of | applicants furnish a certificate of | health when aplying for a license. ‘When the unfavorable report was made, Delegate Popp sought to substi- tute the bill for the unfavorable report, | but was voted down overwhelmingly. ‘The motion to table came from Dele- gate Leffler of Elkton, one of the Mary- | l]and Meccas for runaway couples, seek- ing quick and easy marriage. PROBED Chicago Police Seek Light on Accident to Canadian Barrister. By the Associated Pres: CHICAGO, February 21.—A police in- vestigation, designed to clear up the mystery as to why W. Perkins Bull, K. C., barrister of Toronto, left Chi- cago hurriedly, was under way today. The investigators sought to throw some light on the automobile accident in which Bull was injured a few days ago near Coldwater, Mich. “I don’t know whether Bull's car was | forced off the road deliberately, whether Bull was racing to elude pursuers or whether it was an accident without any significance,” sald John Norton, chief detectives. Norton asked Michigan authorities to co-operate by finding Bernard Magruder of Racine, Wis., an official of the Hor- lick Malted Milk Co., who was with | Bull at, the time of the accident. The police hope he can supply more details of the wreck. The car Bull was riding in collided with a stalled truck. He was taken to a hospital at Windsor, Canada, and later to Toronto, with a fractured leg. Chief Norton said he had learned that Bull had conferred with two men at a night club, said to be operated by henchmen of Alphonse Capone, just prior to leaving Chicago. This, how- ever, was emphatically denied by Mrs. Bull at_her home in Toronto. She said her husband left Chicago to keep a busi- | ness appointment in Toronto. e Marriage L|censes. | . Sherod L.
