" HOUSE PAYS HONOR T0 CONGRESS DEAD Annual Memorial Service At- tended by Families—Senate praises Gverman. By the Associated Press. With ceremony and in silence the House today prepared to honor 11 men death took from Ccngress during the past year. Some of the most picturesque figures of their generation were on the un- answered roll call that climaxes the an- nual memorial exercises, an expres- sion of personal sentiment as well as | Ppublic respect. Lee S. Overman, choice of his party for United States Senator frem North Carolina _ever since 1895, headed the list. The roll included Senator Frank L. Greene of Vermont, who never fully recovered from a bullet wound received by accident in a prohibition enforce- ment fight. _Also among the honored dead were Representative Stephen F. Porter of Pennsylvania, who led a stir- ring campaign against the narcotic trafic,c_and Charles R. Stedman of North' Carolina, last Civil War veteran in the House. The others were Repre- sentatives Lampert of Wisconsim, Kiess of Pennsylvania, Hammer of North Carolina, Curry of California, Quayle and O'Connell of New York, and | Wingo of Arkansas i Families Given Seats. The first semi-circular row of seats| was_reserved for the fimilies of the! dead; before them, a rostrum strewn with' flowers: behind, members tradi- tionally attired in formal, dark garb. Many Senators join in' the observance by custom, though their branch holds separate memorials for each deceas comrade. A patriotic_and religious opening hymn played by the uniformed Army Band Orchestra was, at the opening of the program, followed by a commemo- rative prayer, sacred song and a scrip- ture reading. Representative Mead of New York prepared a_speech praising “this un- usual group” being honored, adding a good word for the entire Congress. The second address by Representa- tive Luce of Massachusetts stressed the importance of contributions by the de- ceased legislators to the Natlon's progress. Senate Honors Overman.
