SANTA ANA, Calif., February 19.— Suicide did not save Adele Ritchie, once a musical comedy star, from trial for the murder of her friend, Doris Murray Palmer. Although the “Dresden China Doil” has been®dead 10 months, a trial to de- termine the degree of her guilt was in progress in Superior Court here today. | The case opened yesterday as though | Miss Ritchie, the former wife of Guy | Bates Post, actor, were present as de- fendant. Upon the verdict of murder cr manslaughter, which Judge G. K. Scovel will have in his power to return at the close of the hearing, hangs a contest for $1,500 between heirs of the two women. Miss Ritchie committed suicide last | April, shortly after she shot M Palmer in‘a cottage at Laguna Beach, | a fashionable artists’ colony. Behind the double tragedy a coroner’s jury found a story of a friendship broken by jealousy. The women became rivals in the work of the Laguna Beach Com- munity Theater shortly before their | deaths Attorneys for Miss Van Essa M- | Dowell, principal legatee and adminis- | tratrix of Mrs. Palmer's estate, are! prosecuting the case, W Moresby White, executor of Miss Rilchie’s e tate, appears as her attorney. | The prosecution opened with a state- ment it would prove the actress mur- dered Mrs. Palmer and therefore, under California law, her heirs were not e titled to receive bequests to her in M Palmer’s will. White asserted testimony would show Miss Ritchie was tem- | porarily insane. | Dr. B, B. Mason, called to the scene | of the shooting, testified he found Mrs. | Palmer had been dead four hours. Miss Ritchie had been dead half that long, Dr. Mason said, and beneath her lay a pistol. Birds Seek Clock in Fog.
