By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, February 7.—The big shots of the game called policy, which has taken as much as $500,000 a day from persons of sporting tendencies in the New, York area alone,.have been holding a series of frantic conferences duringthe last few days in an effort to save their profitable industry from ruin. The policy operators, euphemis- tically known as bankers, have not yet reached an agreement on the best method of selecting the number which daily wins their lottery. Until recently the number was taken from the New York Clearing House Teports, but that source was wiped out Wwhen the Clearing House began pub- lishing 1ts statistics in round numbers. The New York stock and curb ex- changes and the Chicago Stock Ex- change, each of which served as a tem- porary substitute, have followed suit. Emanuel Kline, a colored plain clothes man, says operations have al- most ceaséd during the last few days. Some of the bankers want to take the winning number from statistics pub- lished by the United States Treasury. The search for dependable numbers— which cannot be tampered with at the sources—has resulted in requests to news and financial agencles for sta- tistics that could not conceivakly in- terest even the most painstaking col- lector ;I nnnnc:l data—unless, cf course, he was thinking of policy siy instead of mveummu.‘ e = FAVORS REFERENDUM ON DRY LAW REPEAL Wickersham Commission Member ani e Capital Girl’s Lucky Day THHF.E candlest And each one 2~ represents a year of joyous liv- ing.
