FIGHT ON SCOURGES |22 MAKING PROGRESS International Authorities Re- port Specific for Psoriasis. BY THOMAS K. HENRY. Notable scientific progress has been made throughout the world during the past year in fighting some of the great epidemic scourges of mankind. This has just been reported to the Public Health Service by the Interna- tional Office of Public Hygiene in Paris, of which the United States is a member, which is an international health organ- ization that serves as a watchdog of the human race against the resurgence of such diseases as bubonic plague, cholera and yellow fever, which have no respect for national boundaries. ‘The one new possible specific reported s for psoriasis, a skin disease quite com- mon in the United States, for which no remedy has been known in the past and the cause of which is unknown. It at- tacks chiefly the elbows, knees and scalp, causing disfiguring, whitish s s which in Biblical times caused it frequently to be mistaken for leprosy. In some cities, the Public Health Service reports, peoriasis clubs have been formed so that the victims can discuss their trou- bles with sympathetic listeners. Specific Taken by Injection. ‘The specific is reported by the in- ternational office from Jugoslavia. It 18 a substance obtained by the artificial digestion of scales from & diseased per; son in pepsin and trypsin, the essential digestive substances of the stomach. It 18 administered to patients by injec- tion. The disease is never disabling, and tends to disappear as the victim be- comes older. Specific cures are so rare in medical science that discovery of one s of considerable historical importance. Moreover, the report points out, the work in Jugoslavia may open the door to discovery of other specifics :.mon( substances drawn from diseased ucts, due to their influence on met Usm. ‘The Public Health Service emphasises that it has no knowledge of the efficacy or technique of this therapy other than that contained in the brief note of the lnkmlflan.l office, which speaks of !L as_“a remarkable therapeutic success.” For yellow fever a seemingly ‘“strict- specific’ means of diagnosis, the contribution of Brazilian physicians, was reported. This is based on the decreage in the blood of the affected person of an obscure chemical sub- stance known as alexin which always manifests itself in a measurable way 8t the start of yellow fever symptoms. his is of special value in detecting “benign” cases of yellow fever, where infected persons do not become very 1l but have the still mysterious or- ganism in their blood which they can mflm to mosquitos who bite them. in turn pass the disease to other Discovered No Cure. Yellow fever was almost eliminated @8 a scourge of the civilized world after the Spanish-American War the American Army surgeon and his American and Cuban associates who apparently demonstrated that it was spread only by a certain variety of mosquito. The only safeguard neces- sary was protection from the insect proper screening and destruc- the mosquitoes themselves. But they discovered no ‘“cure’ for the disease once it was conkacted and the latest work reported by the Inter- national Health Office shows that medical science drew too far-reaching conclusions from the demonstration. At least under laboratory conditions man can be infected by direct con- tact, %he skin Intact, with a yellow fever patient and the mysterious “fil- terable virus” responsible for the dis- esse can pass from mosquito to mos- quito w‘llhou(. the medium of & human vietim. “Attempts to obtain an effective vac- cine mlmt yellow fever are less en- g today than when they were Mm" lhe report says. International air tnnsport, the re- port_ says, has brought snother source worry to world health authorities. Abnut 100 localities in Africa and Sou!h America where yellow fever has bee: reported during the last 20 years nre on the routes of pm)oc air lines. Even where there have been no cases in these places in recent years there is no certamty that the virus has dis- appeared mtn( to tuberculosis, the inte: national office reports that ant tuberculosis vaccination—the actual value of which is somewhat in question and which has been attended with serious accidents in some European countries—has been carried on in Rumania on more than 60,000 subjects without accident, “The decrease in general mortality in cinated chil- dren,” the report says, “remains strik- ing in comparison with the non-vac- cinated. It now has been ascertained that this is maintained during the second and third years of life. Among the children this vaccination is c: ried on by scraping the skin, as in small pox vaccination. The vaccine, however, was injected in 5000 Ru- manian army recruits with only one bad reaction, which was easily cured. It-was attributed to sick pu’rou coming from the Amazon region. However, no human case has been reported in Brazil and there is no indication of the disease among the wild parrots of the Amazon jungles. In some mysterious way the disease seems to come to the surface only among parrots in captivity, probably due to crowding and unfavorable feed- ing and temperature conditions. Little Light on Cancer. A little light was thrown on cancer the discovery of a peculiar type of malignant tumor which appears on the heals of certain African natives. This pdrt of the body of the black race is almost white—that is, almost without pigment cells. 8o a type of cancer has been found which apparently is very closely assoctated with an unstable cellular condition. The pigmented ele- ments are near elements free from pigment In a region where local changes in composition of flulds and cells oceur. From Japan a new process for purify- ing small pox vaccine was reported which may have far-reaching results in eliminating bad effects which some- times follow vaccination at present of very susceptible persons. The new vac- cine, tested on rabbits, shows as ef- fective results as the old and favorable results have been obtained in tests with a few children and adults.
