This confidence, bankers admittzd, had been showing signs of nervousness since the recent failure of a big invest- ment house here, and the acid test| through which the old Perpetual passed | during the past two days was said to | have done more than anything else to| restore confidence in the soundness of | financial institutions of this city There were many expressions of pro- found regret that such a situation should have developed, and that an in stitution with “100 per cent reputation should have been subjected to such an experience. But now that it is over, as one banker expressed it, speaking generally for the good of the whole financial situation here in the city. “it couldn't have happened to a better one.” 1 Baltz's Statement. NEW YORK, February 6.—Again re- versing its course, the stock market to- day rallied almost as much as it had declined Thursday. Perhaps the gains were not as large as the losses had been on Thursday, taking the list as a whole, but the upward movement looked more substantial than the downward trend had appeared. It was the lower priced stocks which were the most conspicuous in the early trading. One of tie features was Dia- mond Match, which made a new high for the year, selling over 3 points above where it was at the beginning of the week. International Matoh preferred was in demand, but whether the two movements had anything in common could not be learned. Radio Advances. Radio was bid up to a new year's high and United States Pipe & Foundry pushed along into new high ground. In these low-priced issues there is little opposttion to pool operations from the bear element, which nowada; trates all its efforts on what used to be the blue chip stocks, but now look more like red chips. Auburn Auto was the leader of the volatile type and was bid up to a new high above $150 a share. This is al- most 50 points above its low for this year. Checker Cab Manufacturing went | to a new high to the accompaniment of reports of important trade develop- ments. General Motors, during the morning_hours, duplicated its previous high. The local tractions were out- standingly strong, with Brooklyn-Man- | hattan Transit and Interborough Rapid | Transit both at new peak prices. Other Changes. Elsewhere in the list Eastman Kodak responded to the announcement of a new film-making process with a rise of several points, United States Steel ral- lied a point or so and Bethlehem Steel was higher, as was Coca Cola. On the BETHLEHEM STEEL COMPANY EXPANDS Corporation to Acquire McClintic- Marshall Firm—Teérms Announced. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, February 6.—Bethlehem Steel Corporation announced yesterday that it will acquire McClintic-Marshail Corporation for 240,000 shares of Beth- lehem Steel common stock and $8,200,- 000 of 41> per cent serial notes matur- ing in 10 equal serfes annually com= mencing January 1, 1932. Assuming that Bethlehem be faken at its closing price of Wednesday, which was 52, this would make the payment for McClintic- Marshall approximately _$32,680,000. This latter figure includes the assump- tion of $12,000,000 of McClintic-Mar- shall bonds now outstanding. The payment of 240,000 Bethlehem common shares will not involve any cap- | italization increase, for that amount will be taken from stock now in the Treas- ury. H The Mellon interests of Pittsburgh, which have owned a controlling inter- est in McClintic-Marshall, will as a re- sult of this purchase become large shareholders in Bethlehem. C. D. Mar- shall, one of the founders of McClin- tic-Marshall and its principal executive | officer throughout its existence, will continue in an advisory capacity and | probably will become a director of Beth- lehem Steel. This move 1s just one of a series of simjlar actions about to be taken by Bethlehem, which contemplates event- | ually a further expansion into the structural steel industry. SII:VER Q‘UOiTA’i‘IOrNS. The market took its cue from bonds |- and from the Washington dispatches | forecasting a compromise on the bonus | issue and predicting there would be no extra session. The improvement in the grain markets was also helpful. It did not obtain any inspiration from trade sources. Estimates of railway earnings for January, which will not begin to come out publicly for a couple of weeks, were discouraging. There was nothing good from the copper metal market and the same could be said about the steel industry. Nevertheless, the impressive feature, to traders at least, was the abjl- ity of the market to ignore the bad news and to reflect the good. Early Market Firmer. The market turned firm after a lower opening. Neither the ifitial losses nor the subsequent ~ advances - were large, and the trading was the slowest of any opening this year. The pressure on United States Steel } which was a feature of ‘Thursday’s| trading, seemed to have lifted, and the price advanced 1%’ points above its low for the year. Bethlehem Steel also was higher, though Republic Iron & Steel and Vanadium were unchanged. Money renewed at 12 per cent, unchanged. During the -first half hour trading amounted to abont 100,000 shares. See Us About Real Estate Loans We have first mort- ) On our liberal 20 monthly repayment plan. No indorsers required.
