LONDON, February 5—The state- | ment that Great Britain might have to reconsider her naval construction pro- | gram in view of the fact that France | | end Italy are increasing theirs, w made in the House of Commons yest: day by A. V. Alexander, first lord of | the admiralty. | Replyirg to a question, Mr. Alexantier | said ‘he never had sought to hide the | | fact the two continental powers were | increasing their building programs. | “We are doing our best to get France | and Italy to adhere to the principles of limitation,” he added. “If we are unable to do that we shall have to reconsider the position.” He stated that the British common- wealth now was building 46.145 tons in | warships, of which 2,656 tons were for | Canada. France, he added, has under | construction 100,684 tons, and Italy | 100.777. | Mr. Alexander, however, deprecated | the interpretation cf these figures as implying that Britein is losing ground | in European waters. He said it was nec- essary to take the wider figures into consideration. Ol s in Parliament did not re- mplyinz any sug- lause of the 1d be brought {gard his remarks as | gestion the ‘“esc | London naval tre | into operation at p; 1t.
