SECRET MDTOR NUMBERS AID POLICE IN RECOVERY Two Expensive Cars, Stolen New York, Found Here, Despite Alteration of Regular Figures. Secret identification numbers have enabled police here to recover two ex- pensive automobiles which were stolen in New York recently by what au- thorities described as a gang of inter- national thieves. Two dealers here "bought the machines from a man who explained he had lost heavily in the races and was forced to make a quick sale. Detective Frank M. Alligood of the automobile squad said that the usual motor numbers had been cleverly altered by thieves who either could not find or were not aware of the presence of a secret system of numbers. New York authorities informed police here that the thieves who stole the machines had sales agents in many big cities of the United States and Europe. A number of_ stolen automobiles are being sent to Italy, it was said. One dealer here paid $2,800 and the other $1,600 for the automobiles.
