e 1A R R T TWO FRAUDS LAID 10 “YELLOW KID” Joseph Weil in Rockford, IlI., Jail for $6,500 and $150,- 000 Investigations. By the Assoctated Press. ROCKFORD, Ill, January 23,—-'l'he “yellow Kid.” Joseph Weil, faced two hurdles on the path to freedom from the county jail today, both of them thsrg s of operating confidence games, at which he has become notorious. Harry Maule, a Racine, Wis.,, con- tractor, had Weil and a ccmpamon Fred Buckminster, arrested in Chicago ‘Wednesday on a charge of fleecing him of $6,500. They denied the charge. Another complainant, Edward R. Gils- dorf, 68, arranged to view Weil today in if) , formed phntoxrzphs that Weil was one of three men who took $150,000 from him last | Spring in Reno, Nev. Gilsdorf told police a man, whom he believed was Weil, scraped an acquaint- | ance with him in a Hot Springs, Ark., hotel, introduced him to a “former judge,” who was about to “lose his po- sition as handicapper with a racing as- sociation for giving tips to his friends,” &nd was persuaded to bet on horse races. | He said he won $150,000 with funds advanced by the first man, but the *bookie” refused to pay until he showed cash to that amount as evidence of good faith. He returned to Chicago and sold mortgages and bonds, he said, but the three stalled him off during a trip to Reno and then relieved him of the | money during a night visit to & moun- tain cabin. STORY OF FLEAS DENIED Physician Says He Opposes Theory They Spread Heart Disease. ST. LOUIS, January 23 (#).—Dr. Hugh McCulloch of St. Louis, associate editor of the Heart Association Journal, denied here yesterday the statement that fleas assisted in the spread of heart disease, attributed to him in an address he gave Monday night before the Chi- | cago Heart Association. Dr. McCulloch said that he presented @s an_antiquated theory, held by an early English scientist, the idea that certain kinds of fleas are believed to carry the germs of rheumatic fever from which heart trouble develops, and that he had been misquoted as giving this a5 his idea. The Associates glad to make this corr Janet Gaynor Returm SAN FRANCISCO, January 23 (#).— Janet Gaynor, motion picture actress, who recently underwent an appendi- | citis operation in Honolulu, arrived here on the Matson lined Malolo yes- terday en route to Hollywood. Heart Rate Found To Be Increased By New Hormone Professor Announces Dis- covery of Substance Termed “Sympathin.” By the Associated Press. NEW HAVEN, Conn, January 23.— Dr. Walter B. Cannon, professor of physiology at Harvard University, last night announced the discovery of a hitherto unknown adrenalinlike hor- mone. In an address before the Yale Medi- | cal Society on “The Explanation of a Mysterious Emotional Increase in the Heart Rate,” the Harvard professor re- vealed that a chemical substance which he termed “sympathin” is given off by smooth muscle when stimulated by nerves attached to the spinal cord, over which the brain has no control, and affects the heart directly as does adre- nalin. This discovery throws further light on the action of the involuntary or sympathetic nerves, it was said, and THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, ite the heart. ‘While Prof. Cannon dld not comment on the practical value of menum here said it vlh.l of extreme interest, since it suggests that wherever sympathetic nerves terminate, an adre- nallike substance is liberated. Previously, it was supposed adrenalin came only from the adrenal glands, and while many other hormones affect the heart, none does it so directly as adrenalin and the adrenalinlike sub- stance which Dr. Cannon has discovered.
