N SOUTH AMERICA Longobardi Expedition Use Ox Carts to Pierce Central Wilderness. to By the Associated Press. BUENOS AIRES, January 19.—Appli- eation of the “amphibian” principle to ©ox carts will mark the fourth expedi- tion of Capt. Luigi Longobardi to the central wilderness of South America. ‘The Italian explorer stopped here en foute to Lima, Peru, whence his party will head eastward through the Upper Amazon region. Then the group will turn south to penetrate the Grand Chaco territory of Paraguay and Ar- gentina. Oil Reported in Brazil. Oil is one of the principal magnets for this year's trek. The captain says it oozes out of the ground in Western Brazil and that natiyes smear it over their bodies to discourage mosquitoes from attacking them. The observation was made in 1926, but not much could be done about the discovery then, because 18 of the 20 members of the expedition ~were drowned. The leader and one com- panion finally reached Santos, Brazil, after two years in the wilderness. This yegr the party's equipment will tnclude ‘apparatus for petroleum explo- ration and testing. It also will embrace antidotes for snake bits and remedies for typhoid. A }::pomple!e radio outfit, with both sending and receiving sets, will keep the explorers in touch with civilization. The ox carts will be boat-like affairs with low, demountable wheels. Oxen will drag them on land. On the rivers they will travel under either oars or sails. Expedition Starts at Lima. There will be four of these “amphibian carts,” with 42 draught animals for motive power. The party will also have 30 horses and & number of dogs. The human contingent will number 39. Starting from Lima, the expedition will pass along the Brazilian frontiers of Peru and Ecuador, then strike for the Amazon River, following this to its junction with the Madeira. From this point the party will turn southward to the Chaco, a vast, undefined forest wilderness, portions of which lie in Bolivia, Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina. Capt. Longobardi visited this region first in 1923. He went out again in 1925 and 1928. On his third expedition he was held captive for a time by Indians of the interior. They conducted counter-demon- strations creating somewhat of a dis- cordant note, but apparently no dis- es of any importance occurred. Later facing a great mass meeting of veterans in the Sportpalast, the grim old ' fleld marshal briefly broke his lence. “One thing has remained to us—the fatherland. We will serve it in its dis- trees beyond all partisanship in unself- 4sh love and loyalty.” veterans Tose uproariously to the President in three cheers for fatherland.
