" MIAM BEACH DRIVE NOW HOT CONTEST Business Arrayed Against Millionaires’ Committee De- manding Gambling Lid. By the Associated Press MIAMI BEACH, Fla., January 19.—A “keep out” sign for gamblers firmly tacked over the municipal doorway, residents of this Winter playground yesterday awaited developments in the drive of the Socially and Financially Exclusive Committee of 100 to rid the Tesort of statute violators. The campaign took the form of a contest, with the socially elect on one side, business and tradesmen on the other and the municipal council in the guise of a referee striving to please both parties. Gamblers and bookmakers watched ceuriously along the sidelines with resi- dents of the resort. Tight Lid Demanded. ‘The millionaries, generalled by Joseph Adams and Clayton Sedgewick Cooper and representing members ot the committee of 100, inaugurated the campaign with a demand for a tightly | lidded town during the Winter months. ‘The penalty for failure, Adams said, would be withdrawals of investments by himself and other wealthy land and estate owners. Adams holds city prop- erty valued at $2,000,000, he said. The business and tradesmen took up the gauntlet in favor of an open town, as they reviewed prospects of a slim Winter season in event the place went “blue law.” Mayor Changes Stand. Mayor Val C. Cleary hewed flrmly to the line of law enforcement in a public statement to the delegation. Later, however, with the plea of the business and trades men for a retrac- tion, the mayor said the council would adopt a “liberal policy” in regard to entertainment features. Dr. Richard Mead, president of the city council, said there would be no “blue laws” passed, but he and his con- ferees would enforce the law. A sidelight on the situation was the arrest last night of eight men on vagrancy charges. Among them were well known local characters. | i i SHIPPING NEWS Arrivals at and_Sailings From New York.
