HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, January 8.—Reflecting the caution of the in-and-out trader rather than any change in funda- mentals, today’s stock market was in- clined toward reaction. Instances of Weakness were rare and volume fell off on the decline, but the upward move- ment under way since the first of the year was checked. The news was mixed, but in the main not unfavorable. From the steel trade reports were optimisiic and the expectation was that the unfilled ton- nage statement of the United States Steel Corporation to be made public Saturday would show a substantial in- crease. Sales of chain stores, while lower in dollars than in the same period a year ago, did not show a de- crease proportionate to the decline in commodity prices. Unfavorable Factors. On the other hand, the copper metal situation was not so satisfactory, with some offerings at concessions from the official price, and railroad car loadings continued to reveal decreases. The New York Central lines for the week ending January 3 loaded 42,337 cars, against 54,057 for the same week of 1930. The copper stocks were all lower, with losses of 1 to 2 points in Anaconda and in American Smelting & Refining. Cerro de Pasco sold off, as might have been expected from the trade news. United States Steel was heavy, as it had been on Wednesday, and the standard industrials ranged lower, including Westinghouse Electric, as to which traders were stressing the point that earnings were not much over the pres- ent dividend rate, and General Motors and Allied Chemical. Rail Group Lower. Ralls lost a part of their gain of the day before, but without any increase in volume. Baltimore & Ohio, Atchison, New York Central and Northern Pacific all yielded. The utilities moved sym- pathetically with the rest of the list. In the oils selling appeared in Phillips Petroleum and a few other indépend- ents. As for the market as a whole, the Street is keeping in mind the lesson of a year ago, when prices were bid up rapidly during the late Winter and early Spring, only to collapse again. No one wants a repetition of that ex- perience, and so, although there are pools operating, they do so cautiously e Capital Wanted for Expansion Opportunity for Ezceptional Imcome.
