CHICAGO, January 5.— Quiet pre- vailed today at the parish of St. Mary Magdalene Church, following a dis- turbm%oe during which several hundred parishioners, resisting removal of their stor, Rev. Edward A. Kowaleski, fought with police. Ten men were ar- rested but were subsequently released without charges. Police said that some of them were hoodlums and not af- filiated with the church. The trouble, coming as a prelude to the early Sunday morning mass, began when a group of young men climbed through the church windows and start- ed ringing the bells. Others lighted a bonfire. Aroused by the noise, scores of paris] ers hurried to the scene and a ri ad of 125 police dispersed the crowd by using their clubs on the leaders. P. Photo. FOUR HELD IN PROBE OF MILL HOME FIRE Residence of Non-Union Textile Worker at Schoolfield Saved. -Empty Storehouse Burns. DANVILLE, Va. January 5.—Four men were in jail here today, arrested by military authorities at Schoolfield pending investigation of an alleged in- cendiary fire at the residence of W. T. Dooley last midnight. Mrs. Dooley is a non-union worker. Early discovery of the fire resulted i its being quickly extinguished. Soldiers’ suspicions were aroused when they smelled the odor of gasoline and going to a nearby house arrested the men after discovering an empty gaso- | line can. They had observed that the porch of the Dooley home had been liberally sprinkled with gasoline. Those held are J. W. Jones, N. L. Spivey, J. R. Jeffries and L. J. Brans- ton. No formal charges had been brought late this morning. A blaze which destroyed an empty storehouse is also being investigated. Four Raid Gambling Room. ROCHESTER, N. PROBATION IN U. S. RAPIDLY EXTENDED Association Gives More Scientific Policy of Treating Crime as a Cause. By the Assoclated Press. NEW YORK, January 5-—Probation 1s extending rapidly in the United States, the 1930 yearbook of the Na- tional Probation Association says. This is due to demand for a more scientific gollcy of the treatment of rrime and he need for ter economy. -six judges, probation officers and penologists are among the writers who touch on juvenile courts, probation, domestic relations courts and crime pre- vention. ‘The conclusion was reached that children and adult first offenders car be treated robation at one-tenth the cost of institutional care and with more satisfactory results.
