IS AENTSIREST OPDIELELTENAN J’ony “Mops” Volpe Is Latest “Public Enemy” Taken and Deportation Is Sought. By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, December 16.—The Gov- ernment has stepped into the fight to rid Chicago of its gangster element. Tony “Mops” Volpe, bodyguard for Alphonse Capone. and ranked by the Chicago Crime Commission as second only to Capone as a “public enemy,” ‘was the first subject of attack. His de- portition to Italy as an undesirable allen was sought. Held Under $10,000 Bond. Arrested last night by immigration suthorities on a warrant issued by Sec- Tetary of Labor William N. Doak, Volpe Was taken to the detective bureau and held in $10.000 bonds, despite his pro- test of American citizenship. Almost simultaneously a report became cur- rent that the activities of a score of alien gangsters were under surveillance of immigration-authorities. An old charge—Volpe’s conviction in 1825 in connection with a $1,000,000 counterfeit war savings stamp plot— was made the basis for the warrant. Volpe, who came to America when 15 Lelrs old, was naturalized a few years ter, but the Government charged he had made false statements in his appli- cation for citizenship. The papers were subsequently revoked. He served a short term for his alleged part in the war savings stamp case. Deportation Predicted. Local officials were recently suc- cessful in returning to prison George “Red” Barker, alleged labor racketeer, and James “Fur” Sammons for alleged offenses which occurred vears ago. Lo- cal agents of the Immigration Bureau predicted that within another month Volpe would be aboird a steamer bound for TItaly. “Chicago will be rid of Volpe for good.” commented one Government agent. “There are no pardons or pa- roles or time off for good behavior when & man is deported. Al Capone will have to get along without his chief lieuten- ant in the future.” Local officials meanwhile continued working on plans in the fight against men classified by the Chicago Crime Commission as “public enemies.” These included placing Ralph Capone, elder brother of Al on trialJanuary 21 on & vagrancy charge. Officers from the State’s attorney’s office raided the reputed headquarters of Al Capone’s handbook operating or- mflmtkm in Melrose Park, a suburb, t night and seized records which, it Wwas reported, would be turned over to Federal authorities for examination in connection with Capone’s inoome. Eight men were arrested. EMPLOYMENT SHARING IS VOTED BY TRAINMEN Spokane Railroad . Workers Offer Jobless Part-Time Jobs to Alleviate Depression. By the Associated Press.
