BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. ' Special Dispateh 1o The Star. i NEW YORK, December 9.—Selling again dominated the stock market to- day. As on Monday, liquidation was heaviest in the rails and met less op- position, but the industrials suffered more or less, although receiving better support. The action of the market in the pre- ceding session brought large selling orders at the opening today. The suc- cessfon of new lows in the rails in- situation and stocks were freely offered for both accounts. Buyers were to be found for the rail- road shares only at price concessions. ‘The result was another long list of Baltimore & Ohio, Nickel Plate, Pere Marquette, Texas & Pacific, Rock Is- land and Great Northern. The two supj dly prime investment issues, Mcgilou and New York Central, broke through their old resistance nts, New York Central selling under $120 a share for the first time since 1926. At today's quotation it was down 40 points from the low of the 1929 panic. Directors meet for dividend action Wednesday and are expected to declare the regular rate. Other Weak Spots. Other rails under pressure and at new | lows included Southern Railway and | Bt. Louis-8an Prancisco among the | issues whose stability of present divi- | dend rates have been questioned, and Missouri-Kansas-Texas, a non-dividend payer. There is no doubt that the de- cline in the rails has discounted all % | known adverse developments. The un- certainty is in the amount of forced liquidation yet to come, not in the value of the stocks at present prices. Two outstandingly weak spots in the | industrial list were Phillips Petroleum | and International Telephone & Tele- | ph, both of which made new lows. g:ul, Inc., and J. I. Case did the same. Worthington Pump fluctuated ner- | vously and Gillette sold off again. The Standard stocks met better sup- rt. United States Seel and General | otors held around the previous close. Bethlehem Steel held well also. As a matter of fact, Bethlehem has already | declared the regular quarterly dividend of $1.50 a share, payable February 16, ' 1931, so that there is no occasion to worry about that rate now. With steel ces stabilized, the stock of the lead- g independent on a 10 per cent yleld basis ought to meet good buying. Led by the ralls, the early market dropped into new low -ground in the heaviest volume of trad in three weeks.
