HIDDEN PANAMAN GOLD DRAWS NEW ENGLANDERS TO JUNGLES Construction Engineer Suffers Hardships to Search Out Dust Which Indians Bar- tered With Russian at Trading Post. By the Associated Press. * BOSTON, December 8.—The lure of ‘hidden gold today impelled a five-man expedition of New Englanders toward the jungle recesses of Panama's east coast. Daniel W. Cameron, oconstruction engineer, explorer, and adventurer, is the motivator and leading spirit in the ex- pedition. A year or two ago swamp fever com- pelled him to abandon an engineering project in northern Colombia and sent him working a torturous way up the east coast of Panama to the nearest hospital at Porto Bello. Off the mouth of a small river, the exact location of which Cameron has divulged only to his associates, he en- countered a small trading post main- tained by a Russian. While resting there Cameron noticed the Russian car- ried on a thriving trade with Panaman Indians, who bartered gold dust for rum and groceries. When he had recovered his strength sufficiently, Cameron got an Indian guide and for two days journeyed up the river in a tropical downpour in search of the gold. “We pushed through the jungle more than a mile to the foot of the moun- tains,” Cameron wrote in his diary. “It was pouring.
