He lost the sight of his right eye 25 years ago through a gunpowder accident. Re- cently he feared that he was going to- tally blind, so traveled the 8,000 miles from the Falkland Islands to London to consult specialists. They told him that he was not about to lose his sight. THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER: I . Dress Reform in Uganda. Questionnaire Fad Annoys_Educator; Dr. Holt, of Rollins Col- lege Acts to Discourage Research ‘Evil’ WINTER PARK, Fla. (Special) —Dr. Hamilton Holt, president of Rollins Col- lege, annoyed by the continuous influx of questionnaires that flow acrpss his desk, has devised a retaliatory method. ‘With receipt the other day of a ques- tionnaire from an educational worker in a Western institution asking for infor- mation in a “survey” of another “edu- cational problem,” Dr. Holt dictated a “stock form” reply to be sent in future to all authors of questionnaires. The reply is as follows: “The academic mind now seems to be passing through a questionnaire craze. Almost every mail brings us requests to fill out questionnaires on every con- ceivable subject. If we comply with these it will take a great deal of our valuable time. Therefore, before we re- ply to your questionnaire just received will you kindly fill out the following questionnaire yourself? “‘1.What are your qualifications for askisg these questions? “*2. What are your qualifications for analyzing the answers received? “‘3. What guaranty will you give that the information furnished will be put to any use?” “The questionnaire craze is merely an aspect of the tendency to glorify re- search at the expense of teaching,” sald Dr. Holt. “I have seen so many ex- amples of the ‘evil’ of research that I have become prejudiced on the sub- Ject. “Today we find hosts of men engaged in the laborious, time-consuming and unprofitable task of writing uninspired theses on unimportant subjects and trying to learn more and more about less and less.” | CITY TICKET OFFICE RMERL 731 15th STREET N.W.
