SAN FRANCISCO, October 31.— Three decorations had been added to- day to the long list of medals bestowed on Ma) Gen. Logan PFeland, command- ant of the Department of the Pacific of the Marine Corps. Gen. Feland, three other officers and two enlisted men of the Marine Corps were decorated yesterday in simple ceremonies here by the French and Nicaraguan governments. | Gen. Feland was presented with the City of Verdun Medal for his heroism in the Verdun sector as a colonel in the 2d Division during the World War. ‘The Nicaraguan Presidential Medal of Merit and the Nicaraguan Medal of Merit were bestowed as recognition of bis services as commandant of the Ma- rmes in the Central American republic in 1927 to 1929. 'I'HOBE who were fortunate enough to | present last night at the rhundeu day concert of the Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge Foundation at the Library of Congress were rewarded by hearing one of the most talented group of string quartets and assisting pianists ever asked to participate in the worthy cause of chamber music. The Brosa String Quartet of London and Harriet Cohen, also of London, were the artists Yor this occasion, and, judging from the enthusiasm of the audience that crowded into every available inch of the small auditorium. the concert was some- thing really to remember. ‘These young Britishers, whom Mrs. Ooolidge brought to this country osten- sibly for her chamber music festival in Chicago, but who have so struck the public fancy that subsequent concerts are coming to them fast and furiously, proved to be musicians eminently adapted to their task. It seemed aimost as though, instead of four separate peo- intent on the best in their various musical flelds, the music rolled forth from a single multi-voired instrument, 20 expert was the co-ordination by the participants. ‘The program, devoted one-third to the Old World, or Mozart and his en- tirely unforgetable string quartet in C major, and the other two-thirds to Prank Bridge's trio for piano, violin and violoncello and Debussy’s string avartet, seemed nicely balanced, if a ir - lei- surely toward the end. The sum total was, however, among the best that music (‘ this sort has to offer and the artists acted accordingly. Antonio Brosa led his men through the evening unostentatiously and con- vineingly. What seems like more or less of a miracle, the absolute agreement of tempo and style was never demon- strated to better effect.
