Facts with which to combat fallacies voiced in connection with the campaign for national representation for the Dis- trict were presented to the Society of Natives at its first meeting of the year last night in the Washington Club by Jesse Suter, chairman of the society’s Committee on National Representation. The society also elected.one new mem- ber and took cognizance of the recep- tion of eight others. In his report to the society, Mr. Suter declared that the 15,105 figure given in the official census as the voting popu- lation of the District of Columbia is challenged by the political organizations here, which insist that there actually are nearer 60,000 voters. Mr. Suter quoted T. W. Noyes, editor of The Star, as estimating in 1928 that the voting population is’ 40,000, “Either of these figures are most in- teresting,” Mr. Suter declared, “for an impression is widespread that the vast majority of our population over 21 years of ‘age possesses the right to vote in some one of the States. So another myth must vanish in the light of the official figures.” Shows Eight States Surpassed. Mr. Suter quoted additional official census figures which show that the voteless District has a population larger than that found in eight of the States which are represented in Congress. These States are New Hampshire, Nevada, Idaho, Arizona, New Mexico, Vermont, Delaware and Wyoming. In his report on new members, Ralph L. Hall, chairman of the Membership Committee, announced the names of newly elected members. They were Donald Chamberlin, Beulah T. Davis, George Adams Howard, Guilford S. Jameson, R. M. Kauffmann, Charles G. McQuiggan, Joseph T. Rose and Victor Kauffmann, Newbold Noyes, associate editor of The Star, was elected a mem- ber under a susperision of the rules last n Bresiding over the meeting, Fred Emery, president of the soclety, cited the first of a series of historical inci- dents which will be features of the or- ganization’s subsequent meetings. He recalled George Washington's perilous expedition by horseback, canoe and foot into_Louisiana Territory to ascertain the French purposes. He began the ex- pedition the last day in October, 1753, with the advice of a Scotchman, Gov. Dinwiddie, to play his cards weil and “ye shall hae nae cause to Tue your bargain.” The adventure was success- ful in unmasking the then current French designs on America. Reviews Recent Legislation. Evan H. Tucker, chairman of the leg- islative committee, reviewed recent im- portant legislation, including the free textbook law, the act providing for the Potomac River drive from Mount Vernon to Great Falls and the architectural guidance law for private structures reared within the city. In the entertainment program which followed the business meeting, a sketch, “Traffic Court in Session,” written by Judge Gus A. Schuldt of the Police Court, was presented by the Wigs and Queues of the First Baptist Church. The leading characters were E. H. Hutchins, the judge; Duncan Price, the clerk; Jordan R. Bentley, the prosecut- ing attorney; Doyle Strenge, defense at- torney; Leonard Baber, bailiff, and Robert Simmons and James McMano- way, policemen. The defendants were Arlie Johnson, Zoeth Phillips, Edward Prescott, Donald Siegrist, William Hall, William Strange, Clarence Kidd, Lena Parks and Elgin Smith. Lena G. Parks also directed the presentation. Other numbers on the rro‘rflm in- cluded vocal solos by Paul E. Garber, tenor; Miss Helen Tucker, contralto, and Eugene Swygart, tenor. Raymond Rapp was accompanist. DR. LULU WATERS HEADS HEALTH RESEARCH UNIT Chairman of Electronic Association Branch, Which Teaches People How to Keep Well. Selection of Dr. Lulu I. Waters of ‘Washington as State educational chair- man of the American Electronic Re- search Association was announced yes- terday. The appointment was made by Dr. E. Lee Burch of San Jose, Calif., in the organization of a National Educational Committee to forward the interests of public health by teaching people how to keep well. “We as an organization,” Dr. Burch said, “are convinced the preventive work can save a great deal of human suf- fering. The laws of nature for the most part are simple and inviolable, If a human being lives as he should live he seldom becomes ill. “It is the object of our national edu- cational effort to teach people how they should live to keep well. Of course, each individual has his own gl’oblems and must work them out for imself, perhaps with the counsel of a capable physician. “But there are certain general laws of exercise, diet and right living which apply to most human beings. It is our desire to aid in making people aware of these laws.” MT. VERNON STEAMER Charles Macalester Under U. 8. Government Inspection Leaves Seventh St. Whart Daily FALL SCHEDULE 10 AA M. and 2 P. At the meeting it was decided that a letter be addressed to District authori- ties requesting that unpaved sections of | Tunlaw road and W place be surfaced | to connect with Thirty-seventh street. This improvement will give the Glover Park district two east-west thorough- fares, obviating the present necessity of circuitous detours. M. O. Eldridge, assistant director of traffic, speaking on the subject, “Use and Misuse of Traffic,” declared that local street conditions are gradually be- ing adjusted to meet the growing com- plexity of motorist traffic. The real problem, he said, is one of synchronized routing, enabling both east and west traffic to move at a steady speed. He requested the co-operation of all local citizens’ associations. Six new members were admitted to the association, bringing the member- ship to a total of 24, all enrolled within the past two years. Gen. H. Oden Lake presided. ‘The masquerade dance following the meeting was featured by two entertain- ment features, a solo dance by 4-year- old Barbara Dyer, assisted at the piano by Mrs. Marguerite Currau, and a comic recitation by Judge Johnson Hardy.
