W BRIDE'S HQME 15 NOVEL IN DESIGN Residence in Spring Valley Fitted Into Sloping Contour of Spacious Site. ‘The large stone house at 4763 Indian lane, Sprirg Valley, which was pur- chaséd recently by William W. Bride, corporation counsel of the District, presents an interesting architectural study due to the sloping contour of its spacious site into which the residence ftf 3 was fitted. ‘To meet this problem, the main wall of the house was sunk into the slope, bringing the living room window sills near the level of the lawn, thus avoid- ing the difficulties of having the oppo- site side of the house stand far. above the level of the grounds there. .Due to this treatment the appearance of the rear or garden side of the house was enhanced. The garage wing of the building, placed at right angles with the main block of the house, forms an “L"” shaped outline. The floor of this wing is on the level with the house en- trances and this caused the end wall to sink into the rising ground to create a low, gabled aspect. Stone Wall Helps Setting. | The landscaping of \the grounds in- cludes a row of apple trees as well as| shrubs. In addition these is a rural type stone wall to add to the setting. The house, which commands a wide vista over the wooded section, is so ar- ranged that the main outlook from the rooms is ever the garden front. This elevation has a stone-paved terrace traversing its entire length and is marked by two gabled bow windows. The uvlng room, square in propor- tions and having groups of windows overfooking the stone-paved porch, is Pllced opposite the dining rbom, with a arge center hall iftervening. Library Over Garage. A lbrary is built over the garage and set apart from the main portion of the house so as to offer the booklover an atmosphere of privacy and quiet. This room is fitted with a huge stone nr:g'l:ce. built-in bookcases and a high- gal celling finished in rough texture plaster. The master bed room and adjoining bath, placed over the living room, has three exposures. On the second floor also there are three additional bed rooms and two baths. The house was built by W. C. & A. N. Miller from plans by G. E. MacNefl.
