Bince whooping cough is most com- municable in the “catarrhal stage” sev- eral days before the characteristic ‘whoop develops it is obviously of great importance to isolate the patisnt in this stage, as a means of preventing the spread of the disease. But a posi- tive diagnosis of whooping cough must be made before we can insist on such isolation. We have a method which en- ables us to make the positive diagnosis before the whoop in almost every in- stance where the method is used. This s the cough plate culture. A suitable pabulum or cuiture medi- um is prepared from potato, glycerin, and blood serum, and some of this le jelly poured into plates called tri dishes. Such a target is held 4 iches before the mouth when the patient has one of the suspicious ex- pulsive coughs. If no voluntary or na- coughing spell occurs, the cough is excited by tickling the throat or cther means. The culture plate is then incubated 48 hours. e Bordet- Gengou bacillus, specific germ of ‘whooping cough, gives a characteristic growth on the plate, readily distinguish- ed from the colonies of other germs commonly present in the throat er sputum. Of course, the absence of these typ- ical colonles does not prove the patient has no whooping cough, for sometimes the plate is not well enough coughed upon or the cough is not sufficiently ex- nosis in the great majority of cases, and should be a routine measure of every health department, as is the use . In such cases the cough-plate culture, if em- ployed early in the illness, may clinch the diagnosis and prevent the spread of the disease to many unwitting vie- tims, On the other hand, some persons suffer with an explosive or spasmodic cough, suggesting whooping cough, which is of innocent character, that is, no;lwhoepm( cough and not communi- cable. An important lesson for many laymen to learn is that whooping: cough is most communicable in the “catarrhal stage” lasting a week or 10 days before the whoop develops. From the time of in- fection to the beginning of slight cough and mild fever is called the incubation, and this is usually & week or 10 days. After the whoop begins the disease con- tinues to be communicable for not more than three or four weeks.
