By the Associated Press. An area of more than 200,000 square miles embracing sections of New Eng- land and the Great Lakes States now has been infested by the European corn borer after 13 years of its invasion. ‘The borer, which in the regions of its most severe infestation has oc- casioned corn crop losses ranging from 25 to 50 per cent, has spread in spite of all efforts to control it. Originally it was discovered mear Boston in 1917 The exact date e: its importation, proba- Gly through raw eroom corn from Hungary and Italy, I8 not known, Spread in New England. From ¥Wcston, as the first center of infestation, tbe borer spread over & poriion 2 New England and East- e Long Isiand, involving an area of approximately 18,225 square miles. It caused severe economic losses to sweet corn, fleld corn, vegetables and com- mercial flowers in portions of Eastern and Southern Massachusetts and ad- jacent portions of Rhode Island. Outlining the scope of the invasion, Strong, chief of the Bureau of Plant Quarantine and Control, said the borer was discovered two years later in Eastern New York, then in Western New York, and in the Summer of 1921 in townshi) bordering Lake Erie in Ohio, Michi and Pennsylvania. Infests 189,783 Square Miles. Since then, Strong said. the corn borer has spread to include approxi- mwely 189,783 square miles, in Ver- mont, Western Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana and Michigan, together with scattered infestations in New Jersey. The Government, in co tion with the States, has aevelnp«ru ‘program of inspection and certification for move- ment out of the areas infected. In the n of automobile traffic alone there are employed at the present 963 men. “Unquestionably this work has re- tarded the spread of the pest,” Strong ltld. “and prevented the establishment ©of many isolated mx tions.” PESETA SLUMPS Bpanish Coin Is at Lowest Point Since Spanish-American War. MADRID, October 9 (#).—The peseta, which has fluctuated widely this yesterday slumped to what bankers called the lowest point since the Spanish-American war. The dollar was quoted from 9.87 to 9.96, while the figure for the British pound rai X Bankers ment and unsettled political mmuonl generally as the cause. Thieving, Gains Freedom in Chicago Court. By the Assoclated Press. CHICAGO, October 9.—John Gorman hoisted his gaunt form wearily and leaned across the prisoner’s rail. He was haggard from days without fcod, days without work. His 6-feet-3- inch frame wasted to a scant 140 pounds. Even the few days of jail fare had not erased the deep imprint of hunger urglary, and they had the evidence lglln!l him—arrayed there on the court room table; a carton of potato chips, cans of soup, a bit of candy, stolen from a wholesale house. He stood there awaiting sentence, indiffer- ent. Jail and food was better than freedom and hunger. The prosecutor stepped up to_Judge Lyle and whupend Perhaps he re- membered “the quality of mercy—" “There is no complaining witness,” the court addressed Gorman. “I am going to discharge you.” Gorman turned to go. “And hadn’t you b‘nlr take the evi- dence along?” Judge Lyle added. “No one has claimed it. It will help you along until you get a job.” A o & Farmers of Egypt are being instructed in better agricultural methods.
