NEW YORK, October 2—The stock market once more took the familiar downward fourse today that it often finds leading down from the tops of 108 |such abrupt rises as that of yesterday. 122% | After - further extension of the ad- 12 |vance in the opening transactions, in- 203% | and-out traders rushed to take profits, 130 land a large portion.of the ground 20% | gained during the one-day advance was 4 |lost. Selling, in the main, however, was in moderate volume, 64% Extent of Detline. 60% Stocks . declining 2 points or more 1% | included United States Steel, General 45 | Electric, Anaconda, Consolidated Gas, American Telephone, Paramount, Amer- ican Can, North American and Loews. Stocks losing 4 to 6 included Inter- national ‘Harvester, New York Central, United Aircraft, Macyn Case anid Bal- timore & Ohlo. United Fruit was a conspicuous weak spot, tumbling 7 points. International Telephone, a weak feature yesterday, was well sup- ported around 29, however, and Radio was fairly ‘steady. ‘Weakness in United Fruit reflected a sharp slump in third quarter earn- ings, attributed to an oversupply of fruit and vegetables in both the United States and Europe during the Summer. It was pointed out, however, that the oversupply of domestic fruits normally clears up in the Fall and the banana business improves. Farm implements also were under sharp pressure, Inter- national Harvester breaking below 65, last November’s minimum. The grain markets, nevertheless, continued to re- flect the improved buying apparent re- cently. Only for a short time after announce- ment of the failure of a curb market | house did -scale selling appear in this market. This l’;‘l’lure, ho:rever. was regarded as of a minor nature, - i sumably an aftermath of the Sisto ffi- ure on Tuesday. Market Closely Watched. Traders, however, were obviously un- willing to attempt to push farther such a violent upswing as that of yesterday. An occasional abrupt technical rebound is an expected development in a de- clining market. Tfaders watched closely the action of stocks as they approached the low points of the decline, mostly recorded on Tuesday. While most of the well known mar- ket averages or price indices have not as yet approached the low levels of last November, a compilation shows that a little more than half of the total num- ber of active shares have recently broken through the November resist- ice points. U. 8. TREASURY BALANCE. The United States Treasury balance announced today as of close of business September 30 was $331,163,294.28. Cus- toms receipts for the month to date were $36,654,823.81.
