By Associated Press. 'AGO, September 27.—The love affair of a war-warped son believing his aged father was carrying on with a nurse was blacked out by tragedy to- day. The father, Rockwell Sayre, 83-year- old president of a real estate concern, ‘was dead, a bullet in the back, another in the chest. The son, Sydney, who was thrice shot down in his plane dur- ing the World War, was held for the murder. “I killed him,” said the former sec- ond lieutenant of the Air Corps, “Here is my confession, written three days 8go. And I intended, too, to kill the nurse (Miss Alma Zschaechner).” Found Beside Body. Police had arrived in time to prevent, that. Sydney, 37 years old, was still in the apartment office beside his fath- er'’s body when officers, responding to an alarm turned in by neighbors, reached the place. Miss Zschaechner had been nurse for Rockwell Sayre’s wife for eight years, she said. Mrs. Sayre is an invalid Sydney Sayre, a University of Chi- cago graduate, who told police he was an inventor by occupation, picked his words carefully in describing the rea- sons for his act. “My father was making love to her,” he said. “He was presenting gifts to her—handkerchiefs and perfume. Had he given her money I would not have cared. This world is pretty loose today, anyway. But father was of the oid school and ought to have known bet- ter. Handkerchiefs and perfume are not proper gifts for a man of the old school.” No Quarrel Beforehand. ‘There was no quarrel before the shooting. “I shot him first in the back.” he told his questioners, “and then in the chest to_end his suffering.” Friends estimated Rockwell Sayre's wealth at a million dollars. There are two other sons—Paul, a professor at the University of Iowa, and Joseph, a post-graduate student at Harvard. Sydney Sayre has been receiving a Government pension on account of his war injuries. Police were inclined to question his sanity. Sayre said that as an inventor he had been specializing in the perfection of collapsible rubber lifeboats. The nurse related that recently he had spoken of working on a noiseless pistol.
