By Cable to The Star. @ ROME, September 18.—The draining of the Pontine marshes once more has ended in disaster. Two directors of the drainage company have disappeared and a third has been arrested after a de- ficit of 7,000,000 lire was discovered and some 20,000,000 lire sunk in the | marshes, which since the days of the Roman Consul Appius Claudius, in 300 B.C., have defied several emperors and 16 popes in efforts to drain them. The marshes resemble New Jersey swamps. They are 10 miles square and lie ‘about 30 miles from Rome. They are a breeding ground for mosquitoes, which bring malaria to the city. Hence the efforts to drain them. The last Pope to sink huge sums in the marshes in an effort to drain them was Plus VI, a hundred years ago.
