QUICK WORK SAVE MAN FRON CAVEXN Well Digger at Oakton, Va., Is Buried an Hour in Tons of Earth. Special Dispatch to The Ster. OAKTON, Va., BSeptember 18.— Buried in three tons of soft dirt at the bottom of an 18-foot well, M. L. Prince of Shockey Station yesterday spent a fearful hour. He came through the ex- perience without suffering bodily harm. Prince and Henry Prenzel were deep- ening the well at the home of Ben Hughes. Only about a foot of water Mfllln!d at the bottom of the shllt Prince was working -at the bottom of the well filling buckets lowered to him by Prenzel. Comes Without Warning. Suddenly the wall opposite him caved h l.n avalanche of dirt and stones en- him, filled up the shaft com- lflzly to 3 feet above his head. The gnll was 6 feet or more in diameter. ‘The heroes of the, rescue were Fren- wel and colored well digger named John Deal, who was working at the home of Mrs. John W. Echols when the cave-in was reported. Working frantically with their hands, they dug down until they located his head and Joosened the dirt sufficiently to glve Prince air. Ald was summoned and 5 or 75 persons soon crowded the bcck yard ar Hughes home. Members of the Vienna Fire Depart- ment brought lumber and steel hoops to bind the interior of the well against further cave-ins, but the rescuers did not wait to use measures to protect themselves. Working frantically, bucket after bucket of dirt and stones was lifted to the surface and emptied. Found to Be Uninjured. ‘When Prince's head emzmu -nd n was found he could speak, frantic haste was slightly nllxad i ‘was an hour before he was finally lifted 10 the mirface and stretched out on the 5 e he was examined by Dr. 5 e Bcfllt of Oakton and pronounced uninjured. Calls had been sent to the Washing- ton Fire Rescue Squad and to the Flh'- fax and Falls Church Fire Depart- ments, but Prince was rescued before thelr assistance was needed.
