GUNS T0 THUNDER INLAST PRACTICE Three Fighting Ships Ordered| to Final Duty Before Being Discarded. By the Associated Press. - Three fighting ships 8f the Navy have before them today one last duty—a bat- tle practice for guns that never again will thunder against an enemy. The Floride, Wyoming and Utah— bound for iscard under the London treaty—are preparing for target practice in Ssuthern waters the week of Septem- | ber 15. On October 1 their names will be scratched off the roster of Uncle Sam’s warships. Most fortunate of the three, the Flor- {da, lies at anchor in Baltimore today communing with other warriors gath- ered for the encampment of the Veter- ans of Foreign Wars. The others are at the Norfolk Navy Yard. Right after the gun practice comes to end, the Florida returns to Hampton Roads to discharge ammunition before being placed out of commission at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. ‘The Wyoming will transfer the flag of Scouting Fleet commander to the U. 8. - 8. Arkansas, and at Philadelphia will prepare to become @ training vessel. Destiny has reserved for the Utah the fate of target, stzaming without crew under radio control to a resting place deep in the Atlantic. For 20 years the Florida and Utah have served the United States. In 1914 they were at Vera Cruz during the in- | tervention by the United States. Both | operated in conjunction with the British | Grand Fleet in the North Channel dur- | ing the World War. The Wyoming was | with them there. - All three escorted the VU. 8. S. Georg: Washington with Presi- dent Wilson aboard into the harbor of Brest, France, in December, 1918. The Utah has won at various times every competitive trophy in the fieet. She brought President Hoover home from South America in December, 1928. Our Fraction of Its With GRTISH SPEEDBOAT FAGE SEVERE TASK Carstairs at Detroit Races Today. By the Associated Press. DETROIT, September 1.—Miss Ma- rion Barbara Carstairs faced an almost gain for Great Britain the Harms- worth Trophy, emblematic of the world speedboat championship. Her faster boat, the Estelle V, was forced out of the race in the first heat Saturday after its fuel tanks broke, while the Estelle IV, which she her- self piloted, finished a poor third, aver- aging little better than 70 miles an hour for the 30 nautical miles. The Miss America IX and Miss America VIII finished throttled down, three ‘miles ahead of the remaining English boat. Members of the British delegation were hoping for rough weather today, believing that the Estelle IV in that case would have an advantage over Gar Wood's hydroplanes. Bert Hawker, who guided the Estelle V, is the first pilot who has been able to press Wood during the 10 years he has held the trophy. After a poor start, Hawker gained rapidly on the Miss America IX, and had overhauled Wood's craft when the Estelle V started spouting flames. Hawker expects to have the Estelle V ready for one-mile speed trials Tues- day. The Harmsworth boats will at- tempt then to break the record of 98.7 miles per hour set by the late Sir Henry Seagrave shortly before his death recently on Lake Windermere in England. By the Associated Press. MEXICO CITY, September 1.—What is alleged to be the largest idol ever found in America was discovered yes- terday near Tecoco, 40 miles from Mex- ico City, by a Hindu archaeologist, Pan- durang Khankloje. It is 33 feet high and {s supposed to date back to pre-Aztec Its existence is said to have been known in the days of Porfiro Diaz, President of Mexico in 1877-1880 and again in 1884-1911, although no books mention it. The stone idol represents the goddess | of water and is called Chalcutlique, and has a thickness of 20 feet. It is fan- tastically carved, and traces of the orig- inal green paint which ornamented the head are still visible. The ancient image will probably have to lie in the deep ditch where it was found, because a railroad would have to be built to haul it out. Three Cold Facts Of vital interest to every citizen THE GREAT 1 The University of North Carolina recently made an investiga- o tion of retail food prices in Durham, N. C., a typical American city. It found that chain store grocery prices of advertised goods were 13.79 cents in the dollar lower than prices in other stores. The Universtiy of Kentucky announced a few days later that ® it had made a retail price study of all sorts of foods in Lexing- ton, Ky., another typical city. It found food prices in chain stores were 14.03 cents in the dollar lower than prices in other stores. 3 The average American family spends for food between $600 and * $800 a year, according to estimates of the best known authori- ties. This means that the average family buying its food at chain stores saves from $84 to $112 a year. Customers of A&P knew these facts before these impartial in- vestigations were made. It is in the public interest that everyone should know them. ATLANTIC & PACIFIC & 1930, The Great Atlantlc & Paeific Tea Co. Kolster dynamic speaker and seven A.C. tubes guaranteed for three months!
