KOENIGSBERG, Germany, August 21 (P).—Dispatches from Kovno, Lith- uania, Tuesday reported an attempt to assassinate the chief of the Lith- uanien secret police, Col. Rusteika. The colonel was shot in the head and stabbed in the body while sleeping in his room at a hotel. His assailants are believed to have been two followers of Augustine Waldemaras, ex-premier of Lithuania, who recently fell from power and was exiled to the provinces. Cay RELEASED UNDER BOND Senorita Manzano Under Mexican Sentence in Assassination Plot. MEXICO CITY, August 21 (P).— Senorita Maria Elena Manzano, serving a six-year penitentiary sentence in con- nection with an alle~ed plot to assassi- nate State leaders in 1928, Monday was granted her freedom under bond. She had served the third part of her sentence. The woman was arrested and charged with plotting to kill Gen. Obre- gon and Gen. Calles by pricking them with poisoned pins at a dance in their honor. The plot was never carried out, but Obregon later was assassinated.
