OTTAWA, July 23.—The Liberal gov- emment’s budget, with its provisions for countervailing duties aimed at United States tariff increases and its wider British preference policy held the spot- light today in the general election cam- D‘T"‘l’“}z general election will be held next Monday when 345 members of Parlia- ment will be chosen: Premier Defends Policy. Premier Mackenzie King, speaking in Monir~sl last night, defended his budget and fiscal policies against at- tacks led against it by R. B. Benneit, Conservative leader. + The premier accused Bennett and the Conservative press of “talking blue ruin and depression simply for party ends.” He compared his policy of increasing British preference in the new budget to the action of Sir Wilfrid Laurier, when he was premier in 1896 and es- tablished tariff preference to create market in Great Britain for Canadii Whe: Bennett, in a speech at Kitchener, Ont., charged that unemployment in Canada had been brought about by the fiscal policies of the administration. He described the countervailing duties, under which Canadian schedules on certain products are automatically ad- justed to equal the duty charged by the country from which they are im- ported, as “duties which some other country makes for you.” “Since Parliament dissolved, Presi- dent Hoover of the United States signed the American tariff bill. That fixes our duty on commodities coming from that country on which countervalling duties prevail.” 16 Countervailing Duties - Fixed. Countervailing duties, he said, have been imposed on 16 items out of a total of 1,188 in the tariif schedules. “This was the answer of the Ki government to the action of the Uni States in raising the ,” Bennet§ continued, “and the difficulty is we do not import any of these goods.” CHURCH GROUP SEEKS RESCUE OF WORKERS Missionaries in Chinese War Zone Unheard From, but Attempts Are Being Made. By the Associated Press. LONDON, July 23—The Church Missionary Society today was hoping to hear of the rescue of Miss J. Har- rison and Miss Edith Mettleton, British missionaries, who have been marooned for weeks in the Chinese war zone with 38 other British and American church workers. ‘The society denied reports that all the missionaries had been reached by American and British consuls and taken the area of warfare between Northern rebels and government forces. John J. Muccio, acting American oonsul at Foochow, and a British col- league are known, however, to have left Foochow Friday to attempt a rescue. Four Americans Trapped. SCRANTON, Pa., July 23 (#).—The engineer and fireman were killed when the “puller” engine of the Lackawanna Limited, crack passenger train of the Woobpw, Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Rallroad, exploded at Lehigh Summit, about 20 miles from ' here, late yes- John Lynch, the engineer, and Ray Whitman, the fire- man, both of Scranton. ‘The fireman on the lead engine was reported to have been injured seriously. ‘The fiyer, New York bound, left Scran- ton at 4 pm. Woman Falls Down Stairs. A fractured skull was received by Mrs. Elizabeth Banks, 80 years old, of 1633 B street southeast, in a fall down the stairs of her home last night. HARTFORT, Wis, July 23-—Work- ing with precision, three men robbed the Pirst National Bank of Hartfort of about $100,000 in negotiable se- curities and cash yesterday after slug- ging Cashier R. W. Bailey and o Place, a customer. The robbers escaped in a large sedan | driven by a fourth man. No trace of them was reported last night. They obtained approximately $15,000 in cur- Tency and $85,000 in securities. The three slugged Bailey and Place when they failed to obey the robbers’ commands promptly. They forced four other employes and a customer to lie on the floor while they looted the cages and vault. Bajley said the loss was covered by insurance. Rewards of $1.000 for each of the three bandits if brought in dead, and $500 each if captured alive, were offered by’ the Washington County Bankers' Association.
