TRANSFUSIONS FAIL IN BLOOD POISONING Herbert Schroeder Dies After Fel- low Taxi Employes Volunteer Contributions. Despite 10 blood transfusions, volun- teered by fellow ‘“cabbles,” Herbert | Schroeder, 36 years old, garage foreman of the Beil Cab Co,, died last night in George Washington Hospital aiter a| nine-week iliness of blood poisoning. Schroeder, when taken ill, was mok- | ing preparations for a trip to Bost where his father was reported near death. An infected toe which developed ?rllooinpcisonm forced him to abandon e trip. Soon after Schroeder’s arrival at the | hospital, it was necessary to amputate the leg just above the knee. The in- fection, however, continued to spread :ndd blood transfusions were necessi- ated. When a call was sent out for blood donors, virtually every driver of the Bell Co. volunteered. A series of trans- fusions, rapidly administered, failed to arrest the infection. Schroeder is survived by his widow | and a young son. They reside at the | Astoria Apatments, Third and G streets. | Even after chloroform was invented, but before antiseptic and mptlc surg- ery came into use, one of every hun-| dred people opernud on, something like sixty used to die of the after-effects. Nolda. ‘The Executive Committee is MINER-OPERATOR MEETING RECESSED Anthracite Wage Conference in New York Appears to Be Deadlocked. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, July 16.—The confer- ences of anthracite operators and miners, meeting to frame a new wage and working agreement, recessed yes- terday until tomorrow afternoon. The formal statement issued at the conclusion of today's session gave no explanation of the recess, and added that no definite conclusions were reached. It was evident even before the con- ference recessed that something ‘had occurred to cause a deadlock. The two parties to the conference retired to ad- Joining rooms an hour before final ad- Journment and reconvened in joint ses- sfon only for a few minutes. Whatever questions had been raised, neither side apparently was ready to yield, even aft- er an hour's private session. No meeting of the miners’ scale com- mittee, governing body of the anthra- cite district, was called for today, which was taken as an indication that the miners were carrying out instructions and that no questions had been raised which required action of the commit- tee. Whether the operators commit- tee planned consultation with other leaders of the industry was not known. Yesterday was the tenth day of the conference. ‘The agreement under which the mines are operating expires August 31.
