TIRED VOLUNTEERS BATTLE NEW FIRES Flames Ragmg Near Bend‘ Oreg., After Menacing Cali« fornia and Idaho Towns. By the Associated Press. SAN FRANCISCO, July 16,—Forest, brush and ‘grass fires which for a time mennced three California and Idaho communities were under control today as weary fighters deployed to meet fresh | cutbursts of flames raging since Friday _near Bend, Oreg. Impeiled by a brisk wind. a blaze be- | lieved under contrel suddenly roared up the side of Mount Maklaks toward Odell Lake, one of Oregon noted recreation centers. Range: feared the fire would race across Oregon’s tilted skyline into the timber aleng Odell Lake. Fear Yellow Pine Menace. They said veering winds would send the crackling blaze into virgin yellow pine in the Hammer Butte area. The Dugout Lake fire east of Mount Washington appeared to have broken over the trenches again. Lookouts saw great clouds of smoke rising above the district. The fire west of Bend, which destroyed some 6,000 acres_of timber, was trenched but still is dangerous. Fires in widely separated places in California burned over thousands of acres and endangered two communities yesterday. In the west end of Middle- ton, a grass fire destroyed a church, five residences and several garages be- fore being brought under control. Town Is Imperiled. ‘The town of Halfmoon Bay was im- periled by fire which destroyed a $100,- 000 mercantile store to the accompani- ment of exploding ammunition in the path of the blaze. Some 6,000 acres of pasture land were Jaid to waste by grass fires in the Tehachapi section and Amador and San Benito Counties. A fire at Wardner, Idaho, which de- stroyed & block of residences, then spread to the forest, was controlled only after it had swept over Wardner Moun- tain to Elk Creek, at its base. Because of growing fire hazard, George C. Joy, Washington State super- visor of forestry, closed parts of the Olympic and Mount Baker National Forests. Two fires were reported today in Kaniksu Forest, Mont., and one at Seeley Lake. RECEIVER TAKES OVER 150 SAUNDERS STORES Federal Court Order Follows Peti- tion of Holders of $500,000 in Notes.
