A—12 CURB BEARS FAIL TOFIND SOFT SPOTS) o2 Mark.et Turns Dull on Small Recessions, but Under- tone Is Firm. BY JOHN L. COOLEY, Associated Press Financial Writer. NEW YORK, July 16.—Realizing and Moderate short selling uncovered a firm undertone on the Curb today. The market turned extremely dull on the small, recessions that followed profit- taking and operators for the decline failed to uncover many soft spots. Utilities were firm, yielding_ fraction- ally here and there on the technical re- action following recent advances. Pool operators were most popular in the spe- cialties, where Aviation Corporation of America was bid up 4 points to equal its 1930 high, but these accumulations were less aggressive. Traders were ap- parently holding to a conservative course and satisfied to take profits rath- er quickly. Anglo-Chilean Nitrate was bought on & rising scale. This company, controls the so-called Guggenheim nitrate-extraction process, is to become part of the Chilean nitrate consolida- tion. Ford Motor of Canada A, Amer- ican Cyanamid B, Deere &nd a few other active shares were quiet and firm. The oils were neglected. Except for & selling movement in Missouri-Kansas Pipe, which dropped 2 points, the group was apathetic. Shares of producing and refining companies were fum on the news of the sharp decrease in gasoline stocks. Electric Bond & Share, American Superpower, Niagara Hudson, United Light “A” and other prominent utilities backed and filled narrowly in & dull market. American and_Foreign Power warrants and Central States Elcctric made some progress. A vigorous drive against United Founders broke the price a point, but it made partial recovery. Transamerica was firm. Call money was freely offered at the zenewal rate of 2'2 per cent. CRUDE RU;BEB. ETI‘iADY. BANKERS’ AC ACCEPTANCES NEW YORK, July 16 (#).—Retire- ment of seasonal credits established six months .go, the steady reduction of national exports and lower scale com- modity prices were factors contributing to a $77,000,000 drop in bankers’ ac- ceptances during Juve, the American Acceptance Council reports. Robert H. Bean, executive secretary of the council, said the $77,375,6%3 decrease to $1,304,831,222 was unexpectedly large, although the volume was $191,781,976 greater than a year ago. Normally, he said, the turn of the half year is ac- companied by a definite upward trend in _the volume of acceptances. ‘The decrease in June brought the total drop since December 31 to $427- 000,000, or 25 per cent, of which $235,000,000 has been accounted for since March 31.
