NANCTAL -CURB STOCKS EASE | AFTER EARLY GA Renewed Selling Follows Higher Opening—Offer- ings Are Light. . BY JOHN A. CRONE. Special Dispatch to The Star. - NEW YORK, June 27.—Stimulated by "\a ‘series of favorable news developments, stocks on the Curb Exchange opened higher today, only to encounter selling in the first hour which caused many is- sues to drop below Thursday's final Quotations, Pivotal utilities were the first to meet selling. Electric Bond & Share, after opening on 4.000 shares at 773, up ls. dropped to 75. American & Foreign Power, American Superpower, Middle West_Utilities, Niagara Hudson Power end United Light & Power A behaved similarly, Cities Service ranged frac- tionally. Offerings Light. Selling, however, did not bring out offerings. Sales in the first two hours amounted to only 241,900 shares, against 52,000 in the same period Thursdsy. This lack of offerings reduced the size of the down swings shortly after mid- day. Natural gas shares, which harbor a large short intercst, improved in fore- moon trading. Memphis Natural Gas advanced as the company called the Iast of its bonds today. Pipe line shares, however, met, persistent pressure. Buck- eve Pipe and Indiana Pipe hit new lows for the year, and Eureka equaled its previous ‘minimum level. This move- ment partially reflected the condition of the Pennsylvania crude industry. Investment trusts were moderately higher at the opening, but later slid off. Blue Ridge was stimulated by the payment of an initial dividend Thurs- day. United States & International preferred rose more than 2 points. In- ternational Utilities A, which recently #old part of iis Canadian properties to American Commonwealth, gained on re- ports that it is about to invest in some major utilitles in this country. Technicolor was the weakest spot in the amusement shares. as it fell 6 points to a new low of 26. Textile shares moved irregularly, Association Rayon preferred declinihg as Ceianese par- ticipating preferred gained. BONDS ON THE CURB MARKET. DOMESTIC BONDS. ds. High. Low. North Carolina potato shippers feel that movement from that State will ex- ceed 6,500 cars, says the United States Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Agricultural Economics, Market News Service. Last season’s carlot shipments from North Carolina filled 6,000 cars, but to date this year more than 6,300 cars have been shipped. Recent heavy no doubt have benefited potato crops on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and Virginia. Trade reports from that | section still indicate short vields on ac- count of the light set on the vines, but also venture the opinion that ship- ments from Virginia will very nearly equal last year's tonnage. A crop of extra fine quality is looked for in Mary- land. The Eastern part of the country will be getting most of their potato sup- plies from this Eastern Shore section until mid-July. However, both New Jersey and Long Island have large crops and development has been earlier than usual. Any material price advance prob- ably would favor early digging in South- ern Jersey and bring out a rush of shipments from that section until soon after the first of July. Virginia Shipments Heavy. Potato movement heavy toward the close of June, averaging near 1,000 cars a day. Virginia was furnishing more than half this number, Prices dropped 25 cents at loading points on the Eastern Shore, but demand slack- ened somewhat. The underlying trend of potato prices is still downward, espe- clally in Eastern cities. Most Eastern markets were amply supplied with po- tatoes in late June. Eastern Shore re- ceipts at $4 to $4.75 a barrel in Eastern terminals were about 25 to 50 cents above the pricc levels for stock from North Carolina and from the Norfolk section of Virginia. Old potatoes were Out of the total move- ment of 280 cars of old potatoes during the third week of June 225 were from Maine. Last report for the season on Green Mountains in Aroostook County, Maine, showed a level of $1.60 per 100 pounds. ‘The production forecast for the mid- season tomato crop is 10 per cent larger than last year’'s hdrvest, but there was an increase of 16 per cent in acreage. Lower yields per acre are indicated in Virginia, Maryland and North Carolina, but better conditions prevailed in New Jersey, and yields there may be nearly 10 per cent larger than last vear. Six- basket crates of tomatoes from South Carolina sold at $1.25 to $2 in Eastern consuming markets, Boat receipts from the Western Shore of Virginia brought $1.50 in Baltimore. These tomatoes were not graded. Midseason onion production may be | 8 per cent larger than last year for the combined group of States. New Jersey, with larger acreage and prospective bet ter yield, may produce 742,000 bushels of onions. Conditions have been ex- ceptionally favorable in that State and June condition reports showed a rating of 93 per cent of normal. Lettuce Market Weak. Not over 65 per cent of an onion crop was expected in Kentucky, but good quality is looked for. A few small ship- ments from New Jersey were finding their way into the Eastern city markets in late June, but California was" fur- nishing the bulk of the supply. Bushel hampers of yellow onions from New Jersey sold at $1.50 in New York and the white kinds ranged from $1.50 to $2. A few ungraded lots from the Fast- ern Shore of Virginia sold at $1 to $1.25 in Baltimore, Lettuce markets were dull and weak, prices showing a rather wide range be- cause of the inferior quality of much of the stock arriving in the large con- suming markets, GRAIN MARKET CHICAGO, 27 (#)—Reports piling their wheat on the graund and making few deliveries except for storage counted today as a strengthening market factor. On the other hand, the movement of wheat in the Southwest taken as a whole continued to be of fairly liberal volume, eight points recefving a total of 1,662 cars today. Some selling here resulted from reported rains in Alberta Province, Canada, but there were also advices that crop prospects in various Canadian districts remain subnormal. WHEAT— High September " e December Bt September Cecember June December 5713 NEW YORK COTTON NEW YORK, June 27 (Special).—The sharp recovery from low levels of the middle of the week brought more sell- ing in the cotton market today and prices set back about a quarter of a cent, ending with a loss of 10 to 18 points on the day. High temperatures in the South, with about 100 stations ranging from 100 to 108 degrees, together with comparative- ly steady stock and grain markets, held prices within a narrower range under a smaller volume of business than be- fore this week. NEW STEEL CENTER INWEST PLANNED Firms Co-operate for Control| of Vanishing Iron Ore Supplies. BY LEO J. RYAN. Written for the Associated Press. CHICAGO, June 27.—The drama of steel with its gigantic figures has a| new major plot in the struggle for con- trol of the diminishing supplies of high- grade iron ores under the ground. | The proposal of the new National Steel Co. to build a second Gary, at a cost of from $40,000,000 to $50,000,000, a few miles from the present Gary at the | southern end of Lake Michigan, is linked up with the maneuvering for ore sup- plies. The affiliation of the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co., controlled by the Eaton- Mather interests at Cleveland, with | Oglesby Norton & Co., operators of iron mines, is regarded as another play for mine control. | In an estimate made by the business week, the life of the high-grade ore de- | posits of the Lake Superior County was | recently placed at 25 to 30 years, at the present rate of consumption. No New Ranges Found. | This estimate was based on the fact | that no new ranges have been discov- ered in_recent years, that the great| Mesabi Range is nearing its maximum development, and that the reserves re- ported by owners do not show a longer life, in the aggregate. Taking into con- sideration the fact that it is not cus- tomary to uncover taxable supplies of ore faster than they are needed, the magazine estimates the still existing Lake Superior supply at 2,500,000,000 tons. State tax commisisons estimate the total at only 1,500,000,000 tons. Shipments from the Lake Superior ter- ritory last season were 66,157,359 tons. The struggle for ore has influenced the make-up of the two largest com- paratively new figures on the horizon, the National Steel Co. and the Eaton- Mather interests. The National Steel Corporation was formed by affiliating | the interests of the Great Lakes Steel | Corporation, which had been organized in Detroit solely as a manufacturing company, and Weirton Steel of Wierton, W. Va. a later entrant into the indus- try, with the M. A. Hanna Co. of Cleve- land, one of the oldest of the ore com- pantes, * SN bi = The combination will give the new National more, than an estimated 40 years’ supply of ore. There was a time when ore of 66 per | cent iron .centent was shipped to the Lake Erie furnaces. Present cargoes average somewhere near 50 per cent. Sénfe of the ore that used to be dumped on piles at the mines is now being shoveled up and shipped. New Steel City. The proposed new steel city, prelimi- nary engineering work for which has been done by National Steel on the site in the sand dunes 8 miles from Gary, | is expected eventually to house about 50,000 inhabitants. The tract on which | it will be built comprises about 5,000 acres, extending up to within a mile of the Indiana State Dunes Park. | Importation of foreign ores, and the use, through more economical methods of treating lower grade ores, will be the sources of iron supply if and when the | hjgher grade pre resoyrces are eventu- allv exhausted.
