FIVE SENTEN‘CED IN INDIA BOMBAY, India, June 26 (#).— Perushottamdas Tandon, the “dictator” of the civil disobedience campaign in the united provinces; Shiva Prasad Gupta, treasurer of the all-India_con- gress committee, and Narendra Deva, general secretary of the provincial con- gress committee, each were sentenced today at Benares to three months’ rig- orous imprisonment. At Karachi, Acharaya Gidwani, local education officer, and Lalni Mehrota, a business man, each were sentenced to a year's imprisonment for inciting a breach of the law. Lord' Derby Tells of U. 8. Topic. LIVERPOOL, June 26 (#)—Lord Derby has told the Chamber of Com- merce he learned something on his recent visit to the United States. He had thought the chief topic of discus- slon there was money. “It was not,” he explained, “it was prohibition and how to avold it.” He was 68 years old. Mr. Vardaman, who became known in the Senate as the “White Chief” be- cause of his custom of wearing white clothing in contrast to his floy hair, succum| to an illness of nearly five years which followed & nervous collapse, He died at the home of a daughter, As an editor, attorney, chief executive and legislator he was prominent in pube lie life in Mississippi for nearly half g century. He served in the State Leglslas ture from 1890 until 1896 and as gow ernor from 1904 to 1908. His Senate term was from 1013 until 1919. During his tenure of public offies in Mississippl he was actively en in rison reform work and spo: legise ition for erection of a hospital for the insane and in providing a deaf and dumb {institute. He was admitted to the W bar in 1882 and the following year came the editor of the Winona, Miss, Express. Later he was editor of other Mississippi newspapers. The body is being taken to Jacksony Miss., where funeral services will be held tomorrow. He is survived by his widow, two daughters and a son. BIRMINGHAM, Ala, June 26— High officiels of the Ku Klux Klan here yesterday denied that the tele- gram warning Oscar De Priest, colored Representative of Chicago, to stay away from Birmingham was sent from the State grand dragon’s office of the Klan, Klan officials sald the message may have been sent by a small of Birmingham Klansmen, but it was not authorized by the State execu= tive office of the organization. James Esdale, grand dragon, is re- ported to be in Illinois, and could not be reached for a statement regarding the telegram. Meanwhile De Priest, a native of Florence, Ala., is ignoring the warning and plans to be in Birmingham July 17, the date of his scheduled address here, according to reports from Wash« ington.
