Lyle, administrator for Washington, Oregon and Alaska, today were under Federal indictment, facing various charges of bribery and conspiracy to violate the national prohibition act. Besides Lyle, those named in indict- ments returned yesterday include Wil- liam M. Whitney, Lyle’s chief assistant and legal adviser; Earl Corwin, prohibi- tion officer; Richard L. LONDON (N.AN.A.).—One of the most important members of the staff at Buckingham Palace is a quiet-spoken man, clad usually in a well cut lounge sult, who is in‘a large measure respon- sible for the Queen's personal safety when she is staying in London. He is the Queen’s personal policeman, & man who began life in the service of Queen Victoria and who, after serving with distinction in the South African and Great Wars, joined the constabulary in order that he might become Queen Mary’s personal guard. His duty is to keep a special night watch over the Queen’s apartments from the outside, and from 5 pm. to 10 .m. he paces up and down the short that runs from the walled garden benel.t.h her majesty’s boudoir and bed room to the corner of the Georglan , dominating the wide lawns. From 10 until 1a.m., when he is relieved, his “beat” is extended to cover the little terrace that runs under the King's dressing room and bath room.
