WESTERN LUMBER PRODUCTION IS CUT Companies in Douglas Fir Region Reduce Production Schedules. By the Associated Press. PORTLAND, Ore, May 28=Col. ‘W. B. Greeley, secretary and manager of the West Coast Lumbermen's Asso- ciation, has announced that many lumber mills in the Douglas fir region of the Pacific Northwest have curtailed production for an extended period. Several mills that normally operate two shifts, the statement said, are plan- ning to operate on a one-shift basis. Others, he said, will reduce cutting schedules to four and five days a week, while many single-shift mills are operating on a five-day week basis. “Large inventories, decreased 'demand fmm nearly all important markets,” he said, “plus operating losses under pres- ent conditions are the eauses.” Bince January 1 the industry has ated on an average somewhat less than 70 per cent of normal, Col. Greeley said. The association estimated that the further reductiohs would place the nvurhue output at less than 60 per cen ‘Wants $40,000 for Finger.
